Blizzard hints at offline mode for PS4 version of Diablo III in interview

Diablo 3

The lack of offline play was a huge disappointment to many Diablo fans when it was revealed — but now a new interview from Blizzard with Gametrailers seems to hint at the existence of an offline-mode in the PlayStation 4 version of the game.

John Hight, a production director at Blizzard, says in the interview (around the 8:35 mark) that “We think the thing that was really cool, that Chris talked about, is that we’re going to allow for local co-op as well as online co-op.”

“So you can have four people on the same screen, no split-screen, and we just zoom the camera out, or if you’re offline…”

At this point he is cut off by the host but, as WoW Insider point out, the heavy implication in this unfinished sentence is that Diablo III will support offline gameplay as an option.

Thankyou to Mike for pointing out that I initially wrote “ONLINE mode in the title” *headdesk*

As Francis would say.

You sons of bitches.

You know it doesn’t bother me completely that it’s coming to PS4. It’s cool more folk get to play it. It doesn’t even bother me that Blizzard allegedly designed the game for consoles from the get-go. (although all evidence pointing to that is circumstantial) This bug me however. Why do we PC playing folk, especially folk like myself who play solo, have to put up with crud like dodgy ping and connection issues when the PS4 folk get the niceties of such things as offline mode? If this is the case it’s going to be a much smoother launch for them than we ever got. Screw you Blizzard. >:( If this happens I’m joining the “we want an offline mode” bandwagon.

it’s almost as Blizzard designed Diablo 3 for consoles in the first place, which as we saw, pretty much suggested they were saying, fuck you loyal fanbase we want money we don’t give a shit, and encourage people to abandon their brand for future games…thats not a good way to go about making games.

If Blizzard don’t port this offline mode to PC then they can die in a fire.

the fanboy tears are sooo delicious!

gammad,

Wow I just love one-line flamebait comments that explain nothing but are there to obviously troll. You, sir, are awesome in your absolute ability to post positively useless comments. Bravo! I’d give you a medal but hey, you’re an idiot.

Well it worked.

:)

fanboy of what? Oflline modes?

Well. Recently moved house… No internet for a couple months.
Can’t play Diablo 3, can’t play StarCraft 2 because apparently it’s a guest copy. (Lies!)
Thankfully my Steam collection mostly works fine, but my god do I hate games not having a flawless offline mode it alienates everyone except the pirates.
And it’s not like everyone is going to have the internet online 100% of the time for the rest of their lives either.

This would be very strange if true. They’re flogging the social online aspect of PS4, it looks like it’s going to have some form of Steamworksish online verification, and D3 as we know it has no offline. They would have to exclude offline characters being used from online games, whereas they set out to make characters universal from the start.

Also, yuck. Playing 4 people on the same screen would be horrible. Have fun kiting, kiddies.

lordapophis,

I would suggest getting any half decent phone made in the last couple of years so you can just tether it. Hooray, now you have internet all the time, at least for authenticating games.

there’s been no comment as to whether the game would require an internet connection or not. all they said is you could play 4 people in the same room.

so really the “hint” part is important. it could be offline, but it’s likely to be online.

would be cool if the PS4 players went on the PC servers. could maybe even provide PC players with the choice. reset everything and go on joint servers, or remain on PC servers. a lot of people are asking for a ladder mode, and this would be one step towards it.

I’d find it really wierd if the console version doesn’t have offline play.

I still hope Blizzard will patch offline play into the PC version somehow. With the recent windy/stormy weather in Brisbane, my internet has dropped out a fair few times in the past week. Had more D3 games cut short than I can remember.

I always find it hilarious that these companies differentiate between people not buying your games because they can pirate it and play it offline in single player and people not buy your games because they can’t play offline in single player.

At the end of the day piracy and DRM/always online have the same result, lost sales except other people pirating games doesn’t piss customers off, always online does.
