WoW Cinder Kitten raises $2.3 million for Hurricane Sandy relief

worldofwarcraft

There are a lot of silly stereotypes about gamers and anti-social tendencies, but for those who genuinely believe them, here’s a nice bit of counter-evidence: give gamers the chance to fork out a bit of cash for something special that marks them as a caring individual, and they’re all over that. Take World of Warcraft’s Cinder Kitten, which has totted up a whopping $2.3 million in sales.

The frankly adorable pet goes for $10, which is pretty hefty even for such a delightful little bundle. But when Blizzard announced hat all proceeds from purchases made before December 31 would directly benefit the Red Cross and its Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, the Battle.net community rallied around nicely. Maths isn’t my strong point, but surely that means about 230,000 players ponied up for the widdle bundle of wuv? Well done, everyone.

*that nor hat.

Compared to how many people sub wow, I wouldnt have thought this is that big a percentage of the playerbase, and overall comparable to the turnout for most general charity events.

yes its awesome that this much money got raised for charity, I just dont think its an example of gamers being more charitable than any other segment of society.

To think that the NY Times talking about the shooter from Connecticut and that he played “World of Warcraft and other violent games”.

Blizzard regularly donate to charity and they give 100% of proceeds. Just google – Blizzard charity.

Now on the other hand lets go to EA and the way they donate:

More clearly, the EA charity drive in question started back in the beginning of December. Essentially they paired up with Child’s Play where the company would donate $1 for very Santa or Nikolaus outfit sold, as reported by Eurogamer. The interesting thing about it is that the charity drive was essentially used to peddle DLC for a free-to-play shooter, Battlefield Heroes, and it managed to rack up $4594 worth of charity money that EA matched, donating a total of $9188 to the Child’s Play charity.

Childplay responds:

In this situation, there was absolutely no dialogue with EA regarding this fundraiser- they did not have our permission to run this promotion. I spoke this morning with everyone here at Child’s Play and no one had any contact with them. You are absolutely right, it does go against our fundraising policy. However, we cannot opt out of promotions we aren’t informed of.

So I’m either reading this wrong or I really suck at math but there are about 10million(well there is more) players in WOW and only that amount of people donted that’s only 2.3% of the population, that is pathetic and it goes to show that gamers in WOW aren’t that charitable.

2.3% you say? I first thought that might have been a big number still, but then read what percentage of Australians donate to charities:

http://www.ourcommunity.com.au/general/general_article.jsp?articleId=4381

http://www.roymorganonlinestore.com/News/1110—12-6-million-Australians-have-donated-to-ch.aspx

Now figure out what percentage of Australians are regular WoW players and we might be able to see just how generous we are after all (Australians at least).

Goes to show hats are the future. :D

I remember doing the same when Valve had the TF2 Japan disaster relief bundle. Sadly I couldn’t afford the package as I was broke, but an IMMENSE amount of stuff I like comes from there.

Ok I might stand corrected but I was under the impression that the 2.3% is in WOW world wide and not just OZ, if it’s just what the aussies have contributed then it’s awesome but if that’s world wide then it would be good to see how many aussies actually contributed, it could be well less than 0.1%.

Either way I don’t dismiss giving to charity, I give a few hungie a year to various charities but I guess the way this article is written to say that Wow players and gamers in general are very charitable is really to be questioned.

On a positive note, it’s good to see that it’s said that 71% of aussies have donated to charity, now that should be applauded, now it would be good to see how much the average person donates to compare a rich person but that is left to be argued in. another forum, LOL.
