Standalone DayZ delayed, Rocket offers explanations

DayZ

Well, it’s 2013 and the world hasn’t ended — but the stand-alone version of DayZ which was supposed to be out before the end of the year hasn’t happened, either. So what’s the score?

“Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn’t here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold – to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be,” explains Rocket in a new blog post. “This blew any initial plans we had dictated to pieces.”

Rocket explains that a closed beta test is to begin “imminently”, with 500-1000 users testing the architecture and stability of the game. One of the major overhauls that the delay has given them time to accomplish is the inventory system, which Rocket describes as “groundbreaking”.

“You scavenge for items now, as individual parts, picking up pieces rather than piles, looking for cans on shelves or under beds. The new system opens the door for durability of items, disease tracking (cholera lingering on clothes a player wears…), batteries, addon components, and much more. If you shoot a player in the head to take his night vision, you will damage the night vision. The changes to this inventory system are huge.”

It would be interesting to know how many copies of ArmaII:CO they sold solely due to people wanting to play the DayZ mod.

It is a good advertisement for modding in general.

First major mod I can think of since CS that has generated so much interest. Or DotA for that matter. Correct me if you know of any others in the interim…

That sounds more like it. If I was interested in the game I wouldn’t have an issue paying for this new version given it seems to be massive overhaul rather than just a bunch of refinements and a couple new features.

Black Mesa maybe?

not to mention that they woulda seen the shit storm over warz

and so now they have a reason to do it right and they can afford to take a bit of extra time to do it

:O…

This is like, totally a WarZ cash in scam.

Perfect, hahahaha

It wouldn’t surprise me if the fervor over WarZ was part of the reason they delayed releasing another “Alpha” of sorts.

natural selection pops immediately to mind tho it generated interest years and years ago, team fortress is in the same boat. there’s plenty of them that generate lots of attention.

What about The Ship?

So….6 months minimum until a release date then …

This better be to put it on Arma 3 or not impressed.

…did you seriously just say that about a “standalone” client?

So what if they haven’t released the standalone just yet. With everything that happen with WarZ I think it’s a good move for them to wait it out a little bit. As someone mentioned before, perfect time to add in these new features etc.

I look forward to where DayZ goes. Hopefully not the same fate as WarZ.

In the first month they sold significantly more copies than in the entire previous release life of Arma 2 (more than a year).

TBH I think the reason they didn’t make deadline is because they took on more than they can handle, originally he stated that it was going to be a bare bones release, virtually exactly the same as the current mod but running on the new engine, I think he’s looked at warZ and realized what people are going to do to him if he tries to charge for something that’s seemingly the same game so they’re putting more work in.

Rocket is just as full of shit as any other developer, that whole spiel about how “people confused me with making warZ and it made my life hard” is just total bullshit.

I do wish he’d talk a little about the zombies because that’s the area that needs the biggest rework, so far the “groundbreaking” inventory system sounds like a 3d paperdoll menu just like the arma series should have had from the beginning. God only knows what they were thinking when they designed that abomination of an inventory and actually released it.

dexterian,

Okay…

phewcha,
I got what you meant haha, but what if they decide to make their own code rather than modding?

nekosan,

Seriously, that inventory SUCKS.

Huh? Are you saying .. what if they make a whole new engine? That crazy talk !!
