Gas Powered Games lay-offs affected 40 staff, Wildman’s future up to you

Unless your scroll wheel is broken you probably know that Gas Powered Games issued a round of lay-offs yesterday. We didn’t have much information at the time, but the Age of Empires Online, Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander developer has become a little more talkative in the meantime.

Christ Taylor told Joystiq that the independent company had had to let go about 40 staff, a significant number, and had to do it fast so that it could pay severance and other associated costs rather than leave employees stranded.

“I think everyone agrees better to have a few bucks to find the next job that run this train to the end and have nothing left to work with. It’s one thing for me to bet the company, but I can’t bet their last severance money, that’s not cool,” Taylor explained.

In a video update to the Kickstarter for Wildman, Gas Powered Games’ most recent (and possibly final) project, taylor spoke directly to backers, explaining the situation and – dauntingly – placing the team’s future in their hands. If the campaign picks up Steam Taylor will be ale to hire his staff back, and he’s asking commenters to advise him whether to pursue it or not.

“Do I shut the campaign down tonight, or tomorrow, and call it done? Do we kill the campaign, or do we keep it going? It’s up to you,” he said.

Gah these is hard, and strange, to see.

As a Supreme Commander fan I do have some affection for GPG, but at the same time they haven’t done anything for their fan base since Supcom2 (they have dropped work they were doing, after 30 or so vlog videos about K&C’s, then jumped ship to AoEO). I don’t think we will ever see a Supcom again, I get the feeling that series is done, but the Kings and Castles series they dropped showed they could still do a great RTS. Wildman just doesn’t appeal to me so far, it seems more “DOTA”ish or something, and that just doesn’t grab my attention…

…to have them fold completely, I wouldnt want to see that, but I just don’t feel it with this title to jump onboard.

“Hello everyone!! I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like this in all the years I’ve been making games. The response has been to overwhelming positive, I don’t think anyone has to actually make a count of the yes and no responses. I’m going to get a proper update pulled together, but this comment is just to let you know that I’m here, I’m watching and reading every comment. (Shane, please don’t cancel your pledge, this forum would not be the same without you – let’s all send Shane our love so he has no choice but to say something nice) And speaking of love… I’ve never felt so much, all at one time, from so many people, with so many nice things to say. FB is spilling over, my phone gets continuous texts, and people from all over the industry are reaching out to see how they can help. I’m supposed to be a grown man, but I spend half the time with tears in my eyes, this is not how I thought this campaign would play out. Without a doubt the response has recharged me, and has given me and everyone hope. I don’t know how this will end, but at this point, I have a pretty good feeling about it, and we’ll keep going now until the very end. Thanks everyone, I can only hope that one day I can return the favor. Chris”

EDIT – My first pledge on Kickstarter, went with just the base pledge. I will have a little faith in GPG that they can do something special with this if it succeeds

Some of the staff are voluntarily coming back into work to see this kickstarter campaign through in an effort to get more info and news out. Got to give them credit for that, and wish them luck. Don’t need to see more game companies folding.

“Christ Taylor told Joystiq…”

The proof-reading is getting really bad guys :S

I wish them well but I think their KS goal is rather lofty.

Indeed. Here’s one particularly bad paragraph:

‘In a video update to the Kickstarter for Wildman, Gas Powered Games’ most recent (and possibly final) project, taylor spoke directly to backers, explaining the situation and – dauntingly – placing the team’s future in their hands. I don’t like to kick the author while they’re down, but the writing is also a bit clumsy.

yea … GoN articles have been going down hill lately, having said that i’m illiterate so it makes no real difference to me lol

People seem just a little too picky to me, I won’t abandon games.on.net over a few typos.

I was more interested in this Kings and Castles than Wildman.

Nearly… every game website have a complainer… or maybe every website has atleast one. (Trolls not included) finally there’s an edit button =D

Sadly they lost their way after SupCom1 – they should have kept pushing the traditions of TA as their “brand” – huge, free wheeling RTS games, rather than Starcraft style pseudo-action RTS games.

I think Planetary Annihilation has probably picked up where GPG should have gone.

caitsith01,

Well Supreme Commander was reported non profitable.
