Strategy veteran developer Gas Powered Games has shocked the industry today by issuing significant lay-offs.

Word first came from industry sources, but the news was later confirmed by founder Chris Taylor himself, telling Kotaku that the experience has been largely positive and he’ll be updating the public as soon as possible, and Gamasutra that he “had to slim WAY down to conserve cash reserves”.Taylor also said that Gas Powered Games “spent all the last dough” it had on Wildman, its newly announced project, and has spent “the last several months working on it”.

“So we’re betting the company on it,” he added.

The vast majority of Gas Powereewd Games’ staff is believed to have been let go. The developer is requesting $1.1 million in funding for Wildman through Kickstarter, and recently wrapped its stint as content developer for Age of Empires Online. Its past works include the original Dungeon Siege games, Supreme Commander, the flawed but promising Demigod, and cancelled passion project Kings and Castles.

Whew, thought that was Gaslamp Games for a second there. I was trying to figure how a company with a few people could have mass lay offs.

How exactly are Gas Powered Games still developing if they have let go of the vast majority of staff? They don’t exactly sound like the company to have 5 projects on the go at the same time.

I question Chris Taylors sanity at the best of times, just watch a few of his vlogs for the dumped “Kings and Castles”. A company that just finished its deal with Microsofts AoEO, and that has a “solid” background with Supcom, shouldn’t be needing to go the Kickstarter route to fund a new game (which may well end up shelved without notice like K&C’s did). What got them to this point is a story I would like to know.

They’re worth supporting just in case they ever make a sc3! :)

Theyve been more miss than hit over the years.

And since theyre already going the kickstarter route, despite all logic saying they shouldnt need it unless they’re absurdly incompetent, You should only support them if they ever put up a Kickstarter for sc3.

Throwing money at whatever they do just incase they are kind enough to let you fund sc3 down the road is rediculous.

So is spelling ridiculous with an “e”

You people realise most of these gaming companies are going to kickstarter to fund projects that publishers wont fund? They pitch an idea to the gamer base, if it’s popular enough or the gamers like it enough they get the money they need to develop it.

Yeah they probably already went to a publisher.

I’m mostly just expressing my feelings over the death rattle a developer that has made several games that I’ve loved.

Gas Powered Games makes really good ideas in games which are very creative but not executed well. Well there aren’t many strategy devs in world of gaming anymore. Competition against blizzard dominance in strategy games weaken by the minute. Total war and Companies of heros are most left.
