Happy new year…

Why do EA continue to run their own servers for console games? Why not use the XBL or PSN servers?

Because EA love to screw over their customers, so why leave that to other more reliable networks when they can screw people over personally.

Comes down to money in the end. EA are tight asses.

Also surprised that one of the best selling PC games of *all* time (The Sims 2 with over 13 million sold) is having it’s servers shut down.
Then again the game was released in 2004…

You can bet they won’t stop selling the game though. :P

15 years on and Blizzard keeps running it’s StarCraft servers and still patches the game, go figure.

Because of of those are titles EA would like customers to move on from… so that they buy the next iteration of each title 2012/2013.

Valve are my fav developers by far, Blizz are decent but you get the feel they’re more leashed down than they used to (before Activision took over) which is to be expected.

Going by thier trends, the new simcity game will be around for 8 years or so then become unplayable. Having an always online requirement and all. I guess we can hope that the one eyed, peg legged guys will sort that little problem out for the legit customers.

This. Why keep servers running when you can close them and ‘encourage’ players to buy new games?

“But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level — fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles — where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running.”

Easy to bitch when it’s being funded by someone elses wallet.

Wow… Games not even 3 years old on that list getting shut down. Nice.

Apparently its less than 2% of peak players on their servers gets your game the boot.

Pretty lame. Here’s why we should support developers and publishers who are proud of their products, giving them support and a touch of polish long after release. It’s a sure way to better quality games, rather than EA/Codemasters style yearly dump and runs.

Shutting down a 2011 game is such a shitty way to treat gamers. Sure, EA, you’re forcing people to buy at least every second sports simulation to be able to play online and that might make good business sense for now.

But I won’t be buying any two year old EA sports title from Xbox Live or on PC from retail/digital because I know they won’t be playable online.

I’ll bet that they don’t reduce the price of these games either.

How about ….

Just never ever buy any EA game ….

Surely some customers are smart enough … or will get smart enough if they get screwed enough …..

EA may implode by then … but then again …
It is a company several decades old … Time to move on to newer companies

It will happen with their FPS, soon.

People still play battlefield 1942, BF2, and BF:BC2.

I can’t see BF3 being online for near as long as the titles I listed above and especially with BF game due every odd year too.

You know what OS going to suck is when we have these games in the yesteryear and would like to boot it up to remember good old times, we won’t be able to.

I believe this is EA applying the Microsoft policy of planned obselescence to video games. I guess it’s a good thing I haven’t played the Sims 2 in a long, long time, but it’s sad anyway.

boycott EA. Last game I’ll buy from them is bf3!

At least for EAs older titles they have LAN support and thus the potential for programs such as Gameranger or Hamachi (although they arent any good for FPS with more than 4 players).

Pretty much this, I personally can’t wait to play this game but how long will it be around for when everything is stored online?
I really hope someone figures out how to make an emulated server so you can cut EA out of it.
