Dead Space 3 on PC to be straight port, no additional features added

Dead Space 3

Speaking with Visceral Games at a recent Dead Space 3 event, games.on.net learned that the PC version of Dead Space 3 will be a straight port of the console versions.

The PC version is understood to have some graphics options, but no support for DirectX 11, no additional high-resolution textures, and no further graphical enhancements above and beyond those seen on the PS3 or Xbox 360.

At the same event, we got to sit down with Dead Space 3‘s producer and talk about how they keep the game scary, even in co-op. Have a look!

Lame, I really dont want to get this on 360.

The lack of graphical improvements from console ports has never been my main concern. It was always the atrocious control / gameplay related problems.

No additional features, except for shitty origin.

Yeah, I’m still hating. Still refuse to install it too.

Well crap.

By the way, you know the game’s on PC/PS3 too?

Pray tell, why would they add ‘additional features’ for one platform? Why go to that extra work and not include it on all platforms? Why even put it on the most heavily pirated platform? (by a significant margin)
Why is Origin bad? I find it much better than steam outside of pricing, and what are you refusing to install; have you already bought the game?

Game looks pretty good based on what the game grumps played of it, but I’ll have to get the first two first methinks.

Wow not even Hi-Rez or DX11?
Thats pretty lazy

Why is origin bad? Perhaps because there was no need for it and it was forced down the throats of Battlefield 3 players. Not to mention it offers nothing of value or a reason for people to want it, hence why most people hate it.

No need for steam either.

How is it forced down your throat? Why haven’t you submitted a court order against EA for coming to your house and forcing a game down your throat? Why would you buy the game if you disagreed with it?

Origin is their way of stats tracking and to curb piracy, and last time I checked EA games are usually pretty good in their DRM before they’re cracked. Battlelog was stupid I’ll agree, but Origin’s at least had free games for sale.

I agree, steam also offers nothing of value or a reason for people to want it ^_^

rapid101,

Here’s the thing, PC gamers who have been playing for quite a while remember a time when we were treated better. A lot of things that some companies crow on about now as being special features for a PC port were just there, they didn’t need to be advertised. Now we get situations like this, where they get a game designed for hardware that was released seven years ago, when the PC can handle much more.

I guess you could argue that EA are caught between a rock and a hard place. They could not release the game on PC and have PC gamers jumping up and down complaining, releasing petitions, etc. They could release for PC in 6 month’s time and do a top quality port and then PC gamers would complain about the delay. Either that or they could knock out a cheap ‘n’ nasty port in record time, like what it sounds like they are doing, and PC gamers would complain about that too.

That said, out of the three options that middle option does sound like the better option, shame they didn’t take that path. Nonetheless it doesn’t bother me anyhow, as to date I still haven’t found a good reason to install Origin yet, so I’m not interested in buying it at any rate.

So Rapid,

If Steam is useless you must have about… zero games then. Since according to you one shouldn’t buy a game they don’t agree with, and most games use Steam these days.

Also, good work reading things way to literally *golfclap*

I remember a time when PC ports were generally a poor approximation of the console game. Back when a PC game was a PC game, and a console game was a console game.
Nowadays there’s very little difference in the choice of games save a few rare exclusives.

Steam kind of force people use it because sometimes when you buy a retail game it doesn’t say it require steam in the front…Offline mode can expire… Forces updates (even if you tell it not to)… If you don’t update you can’t play the game….Pop up every login if in offline mode…. Am I the Only person that dislike steam. And also Steam on occasion cashes at login. The only good aspect are those sales and big picture mode.

You had me up until that point. Why are we assuming it will be cheap and nasty just because it’s a port?

nanorazor: Offline mode can expire…

I dunno man. My grandfather has been running in offline mode for at least a good 6 months. The only time we ever log it in is to install a new game. Surely you can handle logging in once every few months if it does happen to expire for some reason?

Tell me, how does steam know the game is out of date and needs an update without being online to receive notification that one even exists? o.O

Sounds more like steam was ran in online mode with ‘do not update this game’ then was switched to offline mode.

just another game to avoid, console ports ftw ! not.. fu ea … im not even going to torrent it. they can keep there poxbox and pile of shit 3 coded pile of shit

Why is everyone so scared of Steam/Origin again? did I miss something?

The question is why wouldn’t they add extra features, like proper DX11 support for example?

I’m not going into the myriad of reasons why Origin sucks, it’s been beaten to death. If you care enough you can probably find a post on this board where I’ve been through that already. And if you want to use it well then good for you, but I still won’t install it on principle alone.

And yes the first 2 DS games were very good. So is the Android spin off if you have a tablet to play it on.

lol @ the haters…
If you’re a fan of the game/series just play the blood thing and enjoy it. A 3rd party software wont enhance/ruin your gaming experience. Stop been a bunch of twats.
I know me and a mate and going to rock the tits off of this game! GET PUMPED WOO!

*edit
someone will prob make a dll that will hook into dx effects like they have with most other games these days… would be cool anyway :)

Plenty of great PC games, that can’t/wont run on the Console market – such as MMO’s or RTS games – that show a level of quality and capability that console’s wouldn’t even dream of playing..

I dont have a problem with Origin or Steam, they are good delivery platforms, and a good gaming PC doesn’t care any resources taken up by the resident services.

But dont kid yourselves, console games (and their ports) and simply catering to the lowest common denominator – (while charging a premium price), and I agree announcements like this are just a step backwards for a lazy / pressured gaming industry – struggling with 7 year old hardware.

Get ready for forced key mappings and vsync lag..

yeah console port for 79.99? no thanks mate, not this time. guess ill buy a cdkey cheap after i finish Dead Space 1 and 2, which will be in a while.

rapid101Battlelog was stupid I’ll agree

I was skeptical about battlelog but there’s nothing wrong with it at all. Server browser works well, stats are fantastic, especially with the Better Battlelog plugin. And you can customise your loadout from anywhere. Battlelog is great, cept for the voip, that needs to be IN game.

Did Visceral/EA learn nothing from the Dark Souls PC port saga?

Announcing stuff like this is like waving a red flag at a bull. You’re just asking for hate to come your way.

Dumbasses…

gamer87,

lol I agree.

If haters have a real problem with origin take it to the dev’s and stop whining about it in a public forum. The people using it don’t really GAFF.

I’m not that fussed over a game being a straight port as long as they offer the basics. Stuff like resolution, texture, vsync control (and 1 or 2 others if needed like shadows), no mouse acceleration/smoothing, key bindings, that kind of stuff. I don’t feel we need excessive control like FoV, every single graphics nob imaginable, DX11 effect etc, some games just don’t need to include it. It just needs to be well optimized and just work/be playable out of the box.

mindsnare,

I hated it being in a webbrowser, it needed to be part of Origin or it should’ve used its own system like LoL. As it is i’d just lose it over and over again between all my othernormal webbrowsing tabs not to mention having to have the browser open (particularly Firefox these days) was just a waste of resources.

The middle option would require leaving the team on for longer where no additional profit may be had, as opposed to just releasing it as is having designed it for all versions.

Adding extra graphical enhancements over a gaming console is all swell and dandy, except for the fact that it doesn’t actually DO anything for the game (Dead Space 3 has to sell something like 4 million copies to break even as it is). We also don’t know how many graphics options will be available; many games these days still don’t have dx11 (I think they realise excluding dx9 for BF3 was a bit dumb), and not many would go to the effort of going through the WHOLE game and not downscaling the textures as much for the enthusiasts (I’m not sure of their market demographic for this games but I don’t recall seeing dead space on many if any benchmarking sites).
You want your game to run on as many different rigs as possible too and consoles are a good indicator of this when we’re this late into the cycle.

I have steam and non-steam games in my collection. Doesn’t mean steam isn’t bad; you know it lets pirate play with legitimate customers?

I have a hard time reading sarcasm, you see, as most of its innuendos are delivered through tone.

As I said, based on what I’ve seen from the game grumps (the drill part was especially hilarious), the game is actually looking pretty good; towards the end the game became a bit stupid, but I suppose they’re trying to up the tension for the 3rd title as developers are oft wont to do to provide excitement for veterans of the series when they’ve already seen it all.

I’ve seen only a little bit of Dead Space 1 gameplay though which was much slower than this, but you can’t pull the same trick twice anyway.

Why would a game like Dead Space need DX11, exactly? It’s not as though it’s pushing the rendering envelope, yet some of you expect thousands of man-hours to go into developing the render for the [by-far] lowest selling platform just so you can say “ooh, it has DX11″. At least have the decency not to call the developers lazy because they’re not financially suicidal.

Murray Hibble,

Short answer, I don’t. I even said as such in my original post. (ie what it sounds like they are doing, I didn’t say they are doing it) Keep in mind they’ve used the word port however, so it doesn’t sound like it’s something like a “developed with both consoles and PCS in mind” deal. Plus there’s the whole “we’re not adding extra features” thing so I’m just making the assumption it will be a quick ‘n’ dirty port. I would be quite happy to be proven wrong, however.

rapid101,

Never said anything about higher resolution textures or anything. Just sinking in the time to add features PC owners are used to, you know, the ability to change the control layout, proper mouse and keyboard controls without mouse acceleration, various graphical tweaks, etc. It’s all part of, as you put it, getting the game working on as many rigs as possible. I’m not expecting super high res textures, super visual effects that melt your eyeballs or extra content not seen on consoles, just a PC game that works like a PC game. Is that too much to ask?

Now that said, I guess I can look at something like Dark Souls which was also an absolutely dreadful console port. I still preordered it, even before I heard about that certain third party graphical fix, because that game is just fun to play. I’m sure for PC gamers who enjoyed Dead Space 1&2 this may still be a worthy purchase. Unless there are other reasons to dislike it of course.

Personally, I am a little disappointed by this. I love having extra features, specially better graphics and such that were designed for what a pc is capable of. Also, someone else said earlier, that one of the options they could have taken was making pc users wait a bit. To be honest, that isn’t a bad idea. Skyrim went that route and look at how good that game is. Xbox 360 users have had the Dragonborn expansion for over a month now and us PC users will finally get it next month. And you know what? I never once complained. I, personally, am the type of person whom believes in ‘release a quality product, regardless of how long it takes’.

Also, in regards to the Steam/Origin debate. While I dislike both (I don’t like being forced to use something to play a game), I still don’t mind them too much. I think some of the features between them (like the ability to be able to re-download a game at anytime) can be very beneficial, while some of those same features (like being forced to run another program in the background with the possibility of one of those programs watching how you play) can be pretty bad. However, I will admit Steam is becoming more and more likable since they recently added the ability to resale game.

Anyways, enough about all of that. I just hope this ‘port’ is better than it sounds. I also hope they didn’t kill the series by making this one a bad game because I loved both of the other games. Oh, and one more thing,

Shinanigans

That is not true. The PC is no longer the lowest selling platform out there. Last year, pc gaming sales increased 230%, thats an $80 million increase. This was largely due to Diablo 3 being the highest selling game (and one that was PC only), but still, it proves that PC Gaming is making a comeback.

Also, with the rumors coming out about both the Xbox 720 and the PS4, it will only be a matter of time before the console ends up dying completely due to developer suicide (if said rumors turn out to be true). Due to all of this, gaming companies do need to realize, what was good for them since the release of this current gen of consoles, is slowly reverting to what it was a decade ago, an era of pc superiority.

No one outside of EA has played this game yet, and we don’t know what is included, but all of the above were in the first two versions and as far as I can tell the game is running on the same (or a similar) engine.

You people seem to be putting words in their mouth that were just never there and are making some very wild accusations without any sort of credibility to back it up.
