Day Z’s Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall expresses his anger at The War Z

Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall, the creator of DayZ, has used a Reddit thread to express his frustration at The War Z for both their business practices and how the similarity in their names has caused his own family to be angry at him.

“I am angry about the WarZ. I’m very angry,” said Hall on Reddit. “I’m quite hurt personally because anyone can see how similar the words are, and while the average gamer knows the difference individual people don’t. I’ve had family members/close friends mistake the difference and confront me about what they believed was unethical behavior they thought I was making.”

“I really don’t think anyone can understand just quite how exasperated that can make you feel when you’ve gambled everything on something, put your whole self and reputation on the line. So it hasn’t made my life very pleasant and I disagree entirely with the conduct and how consumers have been treated.”

I can’t say I blame the poor guy for being frustrated. The entire WarZ project has been sleazy from start to finish and to be inadvertently associated with it has got to be painful.

I think he may have legitimate grounds to sue the people behind The War Z. I’m not a lawyer though.

Sounds like a job for the GON resident legal guru. Actually didnt he already do an article about The war Z?

He did indeed. However, it was from a consumer’s point of view rather than focusing on what Rocket could do.

Am i really the only one who sees this as Rocket just sobbing because it generates positive exposure for him? It’s pretty coincidental that he was all “I wish them luck” until he saw exactly how bad it would get if he released dayZ in the state that they always claimed they were going to.

All his recent updates just smell like bs to me and i find it pretty funny that nobody is really calling them out on the huge delays, anyone else would get crucified but he has this Notch fanboi thing going on.

No you’re not, the statment that his “non gamer” friends/family knew about it but mistook him for making the war z says they have to pay attention to gamer news it’s not like the war z has been all over T.V or anything, it’s also odd that they know he is making Day Z but they don’t know the war z is being made by someonelse ? i mean every article i have seen has said “insert stupid thing lead war z dev sergey titov has said here”.

Sounds like he’s jumping on the bandwagon to maintain popularity

Just like Justin Beiber. I am of course referring to Cliff Blezinskis comparison of Notch being the Justin beiber of the games industry. Dean Hall could possibly be dubbed in the same manner.

More nonsense. Anyone who bothers to report this news, or anyone who actively follows it, is usually (for some reason) a big fan. While I think the idea is cool the execution of DayZ (mod) has thus far been absolutly terrible. I don’t know what, if anything, has really been contributed here from either party. A mod put together with tape and string and a game put together with left overs and feces… neither game deserves the attention they get, much less the praise or ridicule.

Really? I feel quite impartial to DayZ as much as I love Bohemia Interactive… and I think DayZ is an incredible mod and playing experience.

I guess I just don’t suffer from the same disease as others in demanding that developers meet mine or anyone elses expectations. What’s there works beautifully, I’ve spent countless (not really countless, it’s around 50) hours wandering the landscape of Chernarus and Namalsk and had some incredible adventures.

Oh don’t mistake my comment for expectations… It’s more that beyond the persistent player thing DayZ hasn’t really done anything… almost all of its praise should be directed to the playerbase who have both made it what it is and also ruined what it was at the same time. From a gameplay standpoint DayZ barely doesn’t anything.

Day Z is a MOD. Therefore it’s not meant to be at the quality of a commercial release (though some mods do come close – looking at you Black Mesa). The War Z is obviously trying to capitalise on Day Z’s success by releasing a commercial product based on the mod before Rocket even gets his standalone Day Z game out the door.

Also worth noting is that Day Z is still in its alpha stages (and isn’t ashamed to admit it either). The War Z was supposed to be a finished product when it released on Steam. It wasn’t. This is why The War Z gets a lot of hate and Day Z gets a lot of love.

That being said, I reckon Rocket has painted himself into a corner with the standalone version of Day Z. There’s definitely a lot of pressure on him to deliver the same sort of quality as the mod.

Eh, they always said on the forums it would be an ongoing process. As he explained in his apology what they released was like the “ground work” version of the game, to be iterated upon in future updates. They’d been saying that for the few months before release but no one bothered to check out their forums even once (which coincidently is where I learned the game would be crap – so I didn’t waste my money!). Seems a lot of people didn’t bother to actually look into the game and just spouted nonsense about false advertising and scamming – no. The game is shit. Plenty of games have been shit, that doesn’t make them scams.

Black mesa only comes CLOSE ? get out heathen ! Imo it was a better more polished experience than 99% of AAA titles

I only say it comes close because it’s not quite finished yet. It’s missing the last few levels of HL1.

Onec those levels are done, I’ll definitely say that it rivals AAA games (if not surpassing them).

I’m keen to see how they handle the last levels of the Black Mesa project, particularly since the Zen levels were the worst levels of the entire original, thanks to silly dodgy jump puzzles. The sad thing is they really did look cool in their day. Seeing how as the team did really great things with the levels I played I have nothing but confidence they’ll do a fantastic job finishing it though. Eventually. :P

The little bitch needs to turn off the tears and make his standalone release something worth playing. At the moment it looks like it’s shaping up to be a steaming pile of shit.
DayZ, WarZ, same shit. Both just as shitty as each other.

I LOVED Zen I had so much fun with long jump, one of my all time favorite levels/mechanics of all time.

We really have to stop running to Marius like this all the time – I imagine he DOES have gaming, a job and a life outside of being our go to guy…

Counter-Strike is a mod…
