Bored? Listless? Battling the ever present ennui of modern, post-existentialist life? I hear that, kid, and I have a cure: Magicka is free-to-play this weekend on Steam.
Magicka, for those of you who you not in the know, is a very odd sort of tactical ismoetric shooter where everyone is a) a wizard in a coloured robe and b) an utter stinking cheating fish-faced pinhead, except me, and when I’m winning, they’re okay, really. Arrowhead Games has packed the game and its expansions with humour both overt and subtle, loads of cultural references to feel smug over, and (several patches beyond a rocky launch) hours and hours of multiplayer fun.
It’s definitely worth taking a peak at, and if it earns your approval it’s on sale at 75% off. Veterans, lets us know if we cna count on seeing you in-game, and don’t forget to check out the latest, free DLC pack.

I bought all the campaign DLC yesterday due to this sale. My only problem with Magika is how the writing is an endless stream of pop culture references, I so wish they’d taken it down a different path but the game mechanics are so fun they redeem it.
Plus, you can always skip the more cringe-inducing cut-scenes…
disagree, I love the endless stream of pop culture references.
to be honest I wouldn’t call a lot of it pop culture anyway, more gamer/cheesy action movie tragic/nerd culture.
I was at a LAN last night and we were like “hey, Magicka’s on a free weekend, let’s try that out”, best game we played all night.
The game is amusing the way it is, I like it.
