SW:TOR announces first expansion: ‘Rise of the Hutt Cartel’

Star Wars: The Old Republic

By on December 19, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Well, Star Wars: The Old Republic has now gone free-to-play and with that comes the inevitability of paid expansions. The first of those is now revealed: ‘Rise of the Hutt Cartel’ is coming in Spring 2013, and it’ll cost you $10 if you’re a subscriber, or $20 if you’re a free player.

The expansion, which is detailed here on the official site, adds five new levels to the level cap and bumps it up to 55 with new story-driven missions. These will take place on the new planet Makeb, against “a frightening new enemy”, as well as “never-before-seen Droids and monstrous battle stations”.

I’d rather they take a look at their abhorrent free to play model. As a “preffered” member I don’t even have access to all my characters I made, my millions of credits in my bank; but quite possibly the most incredible restriction is the UI hotbar limitations.

Think I’ll jump back into the Secret World’s much better free to play model.

quite possibly the most incredible restriction is the UI hotbar limitations.

!!!

They limit your UI hotbar?

Tim Colwill: !!!

They limit your UI hotbar?

They did yep, could only have 1 hotbar. I think i read somewhere in some patch notes they removed that restriction though.

They “changed” the 1 hotbar to 2 hotbars (still ridiculous – no UI limiations should ever be a restriction on F2P) though that was a few weeks ago when I hopped on to give it another look after it went F2P. I have heard rumours that they were going to remove the limit entirely, or maybe they already have – I’m not sure since I had such a bad taste left in my mouth I haven’t logged back in since then.

Yeah I had been planning to come back for months after I heard it was going free to play. I never actually read up on the limitations until I was waiting for the game to patch so I could log in and play again.

The limitations pissed me off enough that I cancelled the update and didn’t bother with it.

Not really defending their choice of limitations and restrictions, as I haven’t even played it for a couple months now.

However, people complain about FREE STUFF way too much. It’s FREE for fuck sake. People expect way too much for things these days. If they gave you everything for free, noone would have any incentive or requirement to pay money, and the company would go broke/bankrupt, and you’d have no game!

I definitely hold the fact that they’re taking quickbars and blocking access to characters (if you had more than the free to play system allows prior to your sub ending) against them. IMO if you were previously a subscriber at least let you access all the characters you had previously (and just don’t allow you to create any further ones without deleting another).

Free to play players can currently ‘purchase’ additional quick bars to get back to where they were prior to going free to play. The big downside of this for EA is that once someone decides to purchase their quickbars back what incentive is there for them to actually pay for a subscription again?

How about allow full UI for all free to play users and provide other added value to those who wish to subscribe?

The free to play model does suck, but isn’t that the point? You want the best features you subscribe, I’ve been a subscriber since the game came out as its the only mmo I can actually be bothered to play, bring on the expansions!

I still have an active sub i’d like to see free to players treated better would have a larger pool of players to do stuff with

When did they block access to characters? I played a few weeks ago as F2P.. 8/2 characters, All 8 were playable.

UI was a complete pain in the arse tho. 2 bars wasnt even enough for my standard attacks let alone having room for longer cooldowns, buffs or speeder.

If any of our origional creaters wants control of the GoN Imp/Rep guilds.. Somehow I ended up with both but atm with work/family and UI issues Im only loggin in once a month for a bit of pvp.

The limited UI is just so idiotic. They had the chance to get to a LotRO level of success and they just fudged it up.

Being said, as someone who still subscribes and plays, looking forward to having more content for my Jedi Knight.

Decided to log back in on a whim and it looks like they have indeed made a few changes. Your right, I can log into all my guys, preferred players also now have 4! hotbars, though several million of my creds are still being held hostage and I can only utilize 2/3 of my maxed crafts.

Ah well.

It’s not just that mate, log back in and try to play…

Space missions: You are now limited to 3 per week for non premium. The new heroic versions cannot (100% cannot) be completed with the old epic T6 spaceship gear, you absolutely require T7. You can either grind those 3 missions a week for years to get the required commendations or buy a full set of T7 ship mods for cartel coins. T7 missions award epic commendations for high tier gear… Space missions for me were always mindless little bits to unwind between questing sessions, now they are a prime example of pay2win.

Max credits: 350k. I logged with some 9 odd million spread across my toons. I don’t mind limitations but EQII has the right model, scale money limit to character level. And given how easy money is to accrue in TOR, 350k is nothing.

All story content free: This is the bit that threw me. PvP, space missions, raids etc all require permits to access but the story arc is completely free. So play the game as single player and log out at max level. The storyline is where most F2P modes charge (allowing you to do dailies and grind achieves to unlock content or alternately pay/sub for it eg. lotro), but TOR has it bass ackwards.

Combined permits for paywall content is miles over the sub price: Not just a little bit, literally 56 bucks a month (http://gamasutra.com/view/feature/183525/the_burning_of_star_wars_the_old_.php), not counting a bunch of core unlocks to get the game in the state it previously was.

The real shiv-to-the-gut is the ongoing weekly cost to play SWTOR. SWTOR has five main content avenues: the single player story, the single player space missions, the group Flashpoints (four-player dungeons), the Warzones (PvP battlegrounds), and Ops (20-person raids).

You have to pay for four different passes to unlock four of the game’s five content avenues (all but the story) and each weekly pass is 240 cartel coins. As each cartel coin costs a little over 0.727 cents USD each, 240 per pass, four passes per character, two characters, four passes a month = 7680CC, or $55.84.

Now obviously, no sane person is going to actually pay $56 a month for SWTOR. They’re going to pay the $15 subscription fee, or they’re not going to pay at all. Which makes one thing very painfully obvious: SWTOR’s F2P isn’t meant to be a free-to-play MMORPG; it’s meant to be an excessively contrived demo to get people to sign up for subscriptions.

I’m down with F2P models making the user work for progress and tempting them to pay to shortcut it (spent cash on Hawken, MWO, PS2, EQII, LoL, Firefall, Lotro, DDO etc), but the EA/Bio/TOR model gives you little incentive to stick around. It didn’t convince me to resub, it convinced me to quit again.

I’m hearing a lot’a whining about F2P, but as someone who considers SWTOR as essentially a subscription game, I am loving it. Yeah the free model is gimped, but $15/mo and it’s excellent.

Colour me excited!
