SimCity releases new gameplay trailer showing multi-city play, asteroids

SimCity‘s always-online requirement has made more than a few people upset, but after looking at the multiplayer in this trailer, I’m… pretty sold. Working together on cities that affect each other sounds like great fun and, as this video shows, the cross-over can be almost instant. Take a look below.

SimCity hits our Australian shores on March 7th.

So good

Wow. This looks incredible, goes straight to the top of my most wanted list.

Definitely buying this. Will be so much fun to build a barren wasteland that accepts every other cities nuclear waste.

Looking good.

Haven’t really seen much on highways and subways yet – they were always pretty clunky in the older games.

The game is shaping up very nicely and certainly one I will likely buy and maybe even the special edition (for the superheroes / villains). It looks like they have actually thought things out to properly sim a city down to the graffiti on the buildings and allowing you to make cities for different uses. The ability to upgrade buildings is great too allowing you to have 1 uber police station will be a lot better than having = to having 1 ever block or so especially in higher crime areas.

Colour me impressed. Still hoping that it requires an invite to your region to have someone effect it so that I don’t build Cleansville and then Los Scumbagos suddenly is built in the same region by another player, destroying my clinical efforts.

My lawn ornaments! *shakes fist at those Los Scumbagos hoods*

This might finally be the carrot that gets origin installed on my box.

Hey Meiji… what’s your username :P

THIS LOOKS AMAZING!!! Cannot wait to while away the hours playing this :)

It looks great, which has me worried. I really hope they have managed to buck the recent trend in game design of style over substance and dumbing gameplay down. Pretty graphic and cheap gimmicks don’t last like quality game play does.

I don’t think they’ve dumbed it down. It looks like they’ve just made the interface a lot easier to use. So now you can probably lay power/water/roads all in one, for convenience.

meji@Los Scumbagos you can see my new Sim City profile at Los Scumbagos/phishingforotherplayerstoscumuptheircities.org

It’s all legit I swear! Come to my region it will be pro-hackysack anti-heavy:P

Decisions, decisions.

So on the plus side, we seem to have curved roads at last, multiple connected cities, multiplayer (even some sort of co-op-ish play), shiny graphics, a swish UI, DLC already planned, and what looks to be a very nice simulation engine under the hood.

Then on the neg side, we seem to have no ability to save/reload, no offline play, a smaller single city size limit than in SC4, and of course EA’s track record of shutting down online services when they cease to be profitable.

Hmm. At the price they’re setting, I’ll wait for the post-release reviews.
