Dean “Rocket” Hall of DayZ fame has mentioned a console release for his zombie apocalypse baby before, and now that work is progressing on the stand-alone game, he’s even more certain.
“I personally think that, assuming we don’t majorly screw up, once the PC development has stabilized and sales have been good – a console port would be very likely,” he told Joystiq. “So, do I think a console port will happen? Yes. But not until the PC is done. And by ‘done,’ I mean finished its creative process.”
What about the stand-alone version, originally slated to release this month? “We really don’t know, it’s still our target,” said Hall. “But the architectural changes are scheduled to be complete next week. These are still on track to be completed then. But we don’t entirely know what effect these changes will have, if any, on everything else. So there could be a massive amount of unforeseen work that comes out, we just don’t know until it’s done and we test.”
“The changes we’ve been making are so fundamental to the game that estimates can be a bit of a stab in the dark.”

I wonder how many people that purchased ArmA 2 Combined Ops specifically to play DayZ will spit the dummy over having to then buy a stand alone version (not that it bothers me, already have all the ArmA series, but I can just foresee whining)
I’m struggling to imagine how this will run on consoles, unless its next gen, but would be great if they achieve it.
Well, thats disappointing.
Dunno why he would’nt make it on the Arma 3 engine. Im only buying it one game and that will be arma 3.
I’m with you Meare, expecting quite a few to pipe up about that. There’s so much content in OA that whiners won’t have a leg to stand-on though. It was a free mod, their choice to buy it, and a standalone deserves any dollars they ask of us.
To Shlaimon, unsure how much the impending release of WarZ impacted their decision to stick with ArmA 2, but my guess is that ArmA 3 is still being tweaked, and ArmA 2 provides a known code-base they can more easily build a separate release from.
I purchased ARMA2 just for DayZ. Will I be whining about having to purchase a stand-alone DayZ? Shit no.
Seriously.
Murray Hibble,
WarZ is awful. Absolutely terrible. Terrible community, full of hackers, no content. It will flop and flop hard unless the developers really get their act together. No need to worry about that though, they’re clearly incompetent.
Why would anyone complain about buying Arma2 to get DayZ.. its a fucking mod for Arma2.. it went stand alone.. this would be like people complaining that they had to buy Killing Floor when they already had it when it was for UT2004. You got a great game called Arma2.. DayZ was just a bonus- buying the stand alone DayZ is going to be nothing like the Arma2 equivalent just as Killing Floor was nothing like its UT2004 equivalent.
But with that said, yeah the DayZ community is god awful. the Arma community however is awesome, its just a shame that DayZ clamped itself onto the Arma guys because it did have a negative impact on that community unfortunately (brought in a lot of new hackers). I hope that when Arma 3 comes out, these people leave Arma completely alone.. Bohemia has their money now.. them leaving doesn’t hurt anyone, and if they bitch about having to buy DayZ then I seriously doubt we’ll be seeing them for Arma 3.. good riddance. Rocket did us all a favour by not going to Arma 3 engine.
I bought Arma2 for Arma2. I like dayZ, but Arma2 if my favorite game. Especially with Warfare and Domination Modes. I do hope they get DayZ standalone out this month. I am leaving for the Air Force mid Jan. However, if the delay it to make it better, happy with that.
Also, I do hope DayZ stays away from Arma 3, that game is going to be great.
To be fair the question right now is how much more content gets added in this standalone version. Also I doubt many if any bought UT2K4 just so they could play Killing Floor (on top of the standalone version probably adding a ton of new content). I mean retail copies of Arma 2 had “needed to play DayZ” plastered all over them. If stuff like that didn’t happen then yeah I’d probably agree but as it is and how the whole situation has unfolded I only half agree. At the very least there should be a discount for Arma 2 owners.
mearehear,
Already happened though it’ll probably start up again closer to release. But as I said I can’t blame em completely, I think it’s short sighted to wave away such complaints as greedy players wanting something for free, this particular situation is far more complicated than that.
It all depends on the cost of the stand alone DayZ version as to whether I think people who bought ARMA would be upset – I actually purchased a copy of ARMA 2 for myself, and also purchased several copies for friends and even some GoN members.
If the stand alone comes out and is $20 or $40 the cost is still less then you pay for a store bought new release even when you add the cost of ARMA2 onto it. If they want $60 or $80 for the stand alone.. then I can understand people being a bit upset if they haven’t played the original ARMA. I have, and loved it, so I feel like I got my values worth either way.
You know if it was treated like a sequel rather than the same game with enhancements there’d probably be almost no complaints at all lol.
exe3,
Ture if it were a sequel.
Not every one i made of money. I only bought Arma for DayZ, I’ll look at the price and see weather the price is worth the content you gain, and make my choice as to whether I bother spending more.
