The second playable faction from Total War: Rome 2 (after Romans, of course) has been detailed: the North African state of Carthage.
As explained in their page on the official wiki, Carthage is “an expansionist trading state with a small indigenous population,” whose armies consist mostly of mercenary units.
“The core of its land forces, however, are elite Carthaginian citizens known as the Sacred Band and mighty war elephants from the forests of North Africa. Accomplished seamen, their ships are fast and manoeuvrable, with good ramming and missile capabilities.”
“As a playable faction, Carthage benefits from its mastery of the waves and its heritage as a great trading nation. As a democracy, it also enjoys an improved level of population happiness. The player also has the choice to play as one of three major political powers, each of which confers further military, economic and cultural benefits.”

Only 8 factions is extremely sucky.
i just cant get exited for this :| i still cant play shogun 2 and there patches made the game worse every time for me.
Ah Carthage, the TRUE gem of the ancient Mediterranean. Much better than that poster boy Rome, who had to defile your legacy out of spite.
hehe “seamen” hehe
And only 8 factions? Doesn’t bother me actually – I’ll never have the time to play all 8, and it will help make the agonising choice of which one to play a bit easier.
gammad,
But the 8 factions will be vastly different from each other. Compared to Shogun 2 where each faction is almost the same, 8 playable factions in RTW2 will offer way more gameplay variation than Shogun 2 ever can. Plus expansions and DLC to unlock and introduce new factions I think is inevitable.
aetius,
Having to pay for factions from Rome 1 is bullshit and you know it. The only expansion we’re likely to get is another Barbarian Invasion (which doesn’t add anything to the Republic era). Individual factions will end up being riddiclously priced $6-$9 DLCs each.. Given that Rome 1 had 20 factions… that’s a SHITLOAD of money just to get back to Rome 1 standards.
and you can bet there won’t be any mod support until they’ve milked the DLC cash cow dry (ie. until there’s no one around to make/play the kind of large scale mods that made rtw and mtw2 so great).
