Neko - I agree with you about the capacity all people have for violence (to an extent - there are some I argue that simply could not be made such, but for the norm, its probably true). Soldiers are trained to tap into that capacity for violence to prepare for combay. But the sick part about Jason is not that he has the capacity, but he seems to take real, actual pleasure in killing people. That's a serial killer, not a soldier. They don't want soldiers feeling anything in a combat situation, they want them to keep their emotions controlled and disconnected. But Jason feels a rush killing people - and wants to keep having it. That's just plain evil.

This is perhaps the greatest pity of Far Cry 3, it had the seeds of true greatness, the underlying theme was there, the gameplay was there, the aesthetic was there, but the story let it down.

I got the parts about Jason growing to be like Vaas, I got that his black outs during boss fights weren't drug related, I got that he was growing away from his shallow if innocent friends (though I admit I didn't pay much attention to Jason's backstory, probably because the rest of the characters were so irritating that I didn't want to deal with them), but it was just fumbled so badly. Another masterpiece with a fatal flaw.

This might sound a bit strange but...

I got that. I got all that. Just about everything in the article relating to the story of Far Cry 3, I understood and received. Little was missed in the telling of the story.

That didn't stop it from being boring and crap. Terrible pacing and STILL unlikeable characters, regardless of the statement being made. I find, to enjoy a story, we have to side with someone.

I was siding with Vaas for almost all of the story, simply because he was INTERESTING, not to mention well voiced.

Pacing was the worst sin in this story. Jason doesn't slowly turn into a killer. (BIG SPOILERS HEREON)

After you leave the camp and your brother's dead? You're basically a dyed in the wool killer, and it takes until you save 2-3 of your friends for him to even BEGIN to consider it's wrong, and only until you find Riley that he has a full 'WHAT HAVE I BECOME' moment, which is just daft.

I'm not sure about "ultimate power" but being put in a situation where you're daily dealing with things DRAMATICALLY beyond the norm with minimal oversight doesn't seem to mesh too well with the human psyche.

There are a whole pile of bankers and stockbrokers out there who (functionally) aren't really in control of themselves any more and I'm not sure it's really even their fault. Once you go beyond a certain point you're not always acting entirely of your own volition, you can only push so many billions of dollars around in little piles of ones and zeroes before you take a little break from the reality of what those numbers really represent.

The Milgram experiment also pretty effectively proved that you don't even need to be in control to do monstrous things, the majority of people can just be led with simple verbal pushes.

You take on the plot is pretty interesting (certainly better than people just whinging about it) but i'm not sure if I like the connotation that the capacity for violence is a terrible thing. I'm a killer and so are you, so is every human that ever walked this earth.

It's not the capacity for violence that matters, it's how the individual deals with it.

Major Spoiler alert!

I think the the mission where you have to use a flamethrower and what Jason says while using it pretty much shows how much he's come to enjoy killing, and that's not even halfway through the game iirc. It didn't take me long to figure out he was becoming exactly like Vaas, the very thing he hated. Also, when you hear some of the background about Vaas towards the end of the game you pretty much realize he wasn't much different from Jason to begin with before Hoyt arrived and "molded" him into what he was
