Aliens: Colonial Marines rounds out the year with a new story trailer

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Aliens: Colonial Marines saw some mention in our Most Anticipated Game of 2013 list, and with good reason: it basically looks like Left 4 Dead + xenomorphs, which is a winning combination by anybody’s standards. To end out the year, SEGA and Gearbox have released this new story trailer, framed and cut very much like one for an Aliens movie, which shows some fairly cringeworthy dialogue but also hints at what could be a compelling story. Take a look.

To anyone who’s played both: Is Natural Selection 2 better than this?

Playing NS2 it feels like a faster-paced version of what this game should be, but the trailers don’t exactly give me hope.
The problem is that it just looks way too quick in pacing as well as the fact the campaign seems to be scripted and not at all like the L4D style we were told of (let alone the fact they changed a great many things from earlier on like the fact it was looking like republic commando and not some macho 90 miles a minute crap).
It also appears to be just survival type missions and straight-up TDM in multiplayer with a campaign that may have some non-scripted bits, but I haven’t heard word of a director-type AI for it.

AvP2 is scripted sure, but is incredibly scary by being slow and dark; this game does not look scary in the slightest apart from the fact they’re Giger designs (innately scary in and of themselves).

rapid101,

I’m pretty sure not that many people have played both since this game isn’t out for another month and a half. Keeping my eye out for this one. I have my hopes up, but I’ve been let down too many times to buy this day one or preorder it.

Considering Natural Selection 2 has no story and isn’t really coming off movie franchise, I would say the similarity between NS2 and this game ends at humans vs. aliens,

I would be interested to see how they explain the story as the talk about the Sulaco. Also how they balance the xenos and the humans I will be looking forward to seeing as it was pretty well done in AvP reboot game in my opinion.

wolfstar90,

Unless you’re like me and end up stupidly withdrawing the wrong amount of store credit for WOW HD from my online survey points and end up pre-ordering this to use up that credit as it looked better than all the other games. Considering I also got Family Guy Back to the Multiverse in that order, I don’t think I’ll be seeing Aliens as a bad title to get.

As much as Alien vs Predator (2010) was such a disappointment to me, the few parts I did enjoy were:

1. In the single player campaign as a Marine were for a very, very brief moment you were playing with computer AI marines and fighting off hordes of xenomorphs.

2. Multiplayer Infestation mode, where you and a whole bunch of other marines would hold off against an increasing number of xenomorphs.

So if this game can capture that essence of multiplayer horror, rather than yet another solo experience, I could get excited.

looking pretty dated :(

ralphwiggum,

Wikipedia only mentions the TDM and Escape competitive multiplay at the current time but there are more multiplayer modes yet to be announced:

I suppose an ‘Infestation’ mode may or may not be on the cards… the campaign is sure to have moments like Infestation but it would be good to just have a dedicated survival/hoarde mode. Aliens is definitely the right setting for such a mode.

However, I reckon gearbox (esp with their focus on co-op gaming of late) may take this a step further and do an objective based co-op mode like Resistance 2 did. There would be offensive and defensive moments.

Actually, it would be good to have the ability to do all the multiplayer modes with bots filling in. Not enough games do that these days.

I’m mainly hoping the game has proper split-screen online support so my bro and I can play online with the one copy. Always loved this in Resistance 2.

Stop the presses everyone! Games are no longer about gameplay; they are now i nfact about creating pretty games with no depth.

From the sounds of it there doesn’t seem to be any randomisation to the campaign otherwise they’d be bragging about it. If the game doesn’t have horror going to it on the likes of AvP2 (one of the scariest games ever made) then why isn’t this just a reskinned dead space?

I haven’t seen much MP gameplay but they could at least add in a ‘zombie’ mode where anyone who dies becomes another alien.

have faith in this! please!!!! atleast it looks that they’ve really captured the tone of the movies in it, i hope its a decent sized single player like 10 hours or something…but i doubt it :( lol

Sure, let’s judge it on its content. So far we know that it has a plot which makes no sense in the context of the Alien canon, and that it features a bunch of alien creatures which have no basis in the Alien canon. The gameplay as displayed so far looks generic.

So, yeah, not holding out high hopes.

Why THE HELL can’t someone just make a good, squad-based, suspenseful co-op game featuring the proper aliens from Alien/s only?
