I continue to be cautiously optimistic about The Elder Scrolls Online. Every modern MMO says it’s different and unique to every other, and many fail to deliver that. I feel that some of The Elder Scrolls Online‘s ideas are very interesting, though — and above all, completely doable — which means they may just deliver what they promise. Whether it works still remains to be seen.
We have here a introduction to The Elder Scrolls Online, showing us many of the concepts that make it stand out, including some of the customisation options which suggest a more free-form style of play halfway between any generic MMO and the open style of The Secret World. Anyway, I’ve done enough ranting, and don’t take my word for it – check out the moving pictures below and let us know what you think. Will it live up to its promises? Will it live up to the single player games? Will it be just another MMO? Tell you what you think.

Wow.
So what I got from this is.. it’s a generic themepark based MMO, with a few things changed around to make it “Different, innovative” and yet the game really opens up at level cap for the gear grind and pvp grind.
BORING. I can play WoW for that .. or 100 other themepark MMOs. Thanks guys, you’ve answered the prayers of all MMO gamers by yet again bringing out a clone of an already established concept beaten in the ground for the past 10 years.
can’t wait… really.
It’s *way* to early to say anything specific yet kinkykel. I wrote about this for VG247 today, and I’m sticking to my analysis so far.
- Focusing on the lore of the world is a big thing, but implementation of such into actual game mechanics is a challenge.
- Mega-servers are The Way To Go, because your game will largely rise or fall based on the social aspects of the game.
- Graphics look great, but not all the time. Character animations are very stilted. But code still being worked on is hardly the time to make a decision.
- PvP has three factions, awesome. Now we wait to see how many can play at once.
The video leads us to ask more questions, rather than answer them .. and I’m certain that is the intention of the release. More videos are coming which will begin to define these points.
I want to be playing Day One. Whilst I’m not an Elder Scrolls tragic like quite a few others here, I’m certainly optimistic – though not confident.
It’s not Day One I’m worried about. It’s Day Thirty Two.
If it were *way* to early to say anything, then they [developers] shouldn’t be saying it yet. Yes I get where you’re coming from, my post was simply the impression I got from the video.
I’ll still sit back and evaluate it as it continues, but I can honestly see this as another SWTOR. Focus on smaller aspect of the game to make the game ‘Unique’ for it to lose attention in other more important areas.
I’ll keep my eyes open, just not impressed with it yet.
kinkykel,
Look, it’s never too early for internet pessimists to come to an opinion about these things, but I’m most excited about exploring the Elder Scrolls world, because of all the lore I read about in Oblivion and Skyrim. Some of that is just brilliant stuff as far as I’m concerned, and I’m wondering if I’ll see some of it in play in the game. I’m hoping that 1000 years before Skyrim involves Potema, the Wolf Queen of Solitude.
I’m excited about exploring the lore of Elder Scrolls aswell. I’m just saying that nothing about this video inspires confidence. I hope I’m proven wrong.
I have nothing against ‘traditional’ MMOs. Traditional MMOs are fun.
It’s when an MMO tries too hard to do something different, and ends up not being too different at all is when I raise an eyebrow.
It’s like how people criticise WoW, but WoW is very entertaining for many people.
I’m intrested. It’s looking better than those early shots and info. If it keeps going the way it is I’ll probably drop some money on it… Not hanging out for it thought.
Personally I am just over MMO’s, most require to much of a time investment and none have seemed to not become a grind.
Is it so much to ask for people not to try and turn a popular IP into an MMO, I would much rather another single player experience with a co-op drop in/ drop out style system similar to Diablo 3 or Borderlands.
I’ll buy it … If it has no monthly sub if it has a sub I won’t touch it
This is looking more promising as time goes on, however I do wonder if you are going to be stuck in third-person mode. They made a big thing of saying that combat feels like an Elder Scrolls game, yet all the footage is in third person.
I like the look of the game overall, but how they say the game really opens up during the end game disappoints me. My personal enjoyment of TES games are that you’re having a blast doing whatever you please from the beginning, and by saying you need to be level 50 to participate in the better dungeons is a little bit silly when Bethesda have already got scaled content throughout their series. It shouldn’t be too hard for Zenimax Online to incorporate the same combat and level system as Skyrim for example.
Why would you copy the elder scrolls combat system? It has to be one of the most boring rpg combat systems ever.
kinkykel,
