Star Citizen test footage released, shows AI wingmen and brief dogfighting

We don’t need to tell you that here at games.on.net we’re big fans of what Star Citizen is promising, but our appetites are only increased with the release of some test footage out of the unfortunately-named RSI.

“The laser effects, explosions are all placeholders,” writes Roberts, “and there will be significant work done here, as well as some very cool shield effects I have cooking up in the background. My goal with the visual effects is to use a lot the techniques and looks used in film work, which are now possible with DX11 and modern day PCs.”

“In an ordinary game’s development cycle, this would be something we would share internally or with the publisher… but we’re showing our backers instead, since you’re the ones making Star Citizen happen!”

This.

seems like a very promising game from the Kickstarter page, but don’t really understand how this trailer is exciting in any way.

amen to that

amen to that

I do not think that phrase means what you think it means.

If you can’t find exciting in this already ..

For me, this is awesome. I can not wait for this game to be released. 2 long years.

Yeah I got Wing Commander 1-4 from GOG when they had the sales. It’s been too long since a decent space sim has been released. Looking forward to this :)

The X3 series will give you everything you need… there isn’t (in my opinion) a bigger, more complex or more challenging singleplayer sandbox.

caitsith01,

I think napoletana was agreeing with the devs that the lasers need work.

X3 is great but I’m really looking forward to this, more fun to play with other people. And there just showing off the AI they still have 2 years to get the lasers perfected :)

aaand they just hit $3.5M funded!

Murray Hibble,

I thought the X games were MMO’s. :S

they r not…

however X series never had the combat intensity and feel or the combat depth of space sims…

instead they traded that for other things like a semi active in game universe that act and works independent of what the players do…

in terms of the story or actual flight combat however… well… X was never good at it… but particularly after X2, and entering X3 it lost a great deal more of that with the streamlined interface and all particularly it’s more mouse friendly and oriented system.

All in all, X was never the substitute for Wing Commander, Xwing, Freespace, etc… because the old space sims was pure adrenaline pumping dogfight where the focus is on the space combat, X cater for a different segment instead and cater more for the sandbox builder with it allowing players to do anything from building factories setting up freighter lines, etc…

Yeah, the X series (i do highly recommend picking up X3 – Terran Conflict if you get the chance. it’s pretty cheap on steam) are more of a sandbox empire builder.

That said, the dogfighting is pretty fun – it just doesn’t have a great UI for it. That, and the game’s learning curve starts off with a 90 degree turn to the up.

However… if you put the time in (fighting is easy to learn, basic economics are easy to learn… but it does take time, which can be a bit of a let down), the sense of scale in the game is actually VERY satisfying. For me at least :P That and it does have some beautiful polish.

I’m honestly not getting it. This is underwhelming.

I cannot see anything here that X-Wing didn’t achieve a long time ago. AI flying in formation and attacking stuff you tell them to, now with more sparkles?

I’m very excited to see the space sim genre revived, but I really can’t see anything in this clip that’s remotely exciting.

Please, please explain to me what I’m missing, apart from ancient AI capabilties in a new graphics engine. I would like to pledge some money, but right now the other space sims in development have it.

This one is frankly not interesting…

you should see the one on physics instead…

full newtonian physics ooorrah..

thrusters that react exactly like what one expect, and in which losing them creates the effect one would expect in a newtonian flight physics in terms of the consequence.

incidentally, X series? the problem with X series dogfight is not so much the UI (since the UI is really only a problem when you need to order things) as the fact that they sacrificed most of the aspect of space sims that made space sims dogfight nail biting and fun…

ooshp,

Are you really saying that unless the whole thing is completely new, then it’s not remotely interesting? And there certainly aren’t any other space sims in the works now, by anyone, that have anywhere near the potential of star citizen, mostly due to the money involved in this game.

X-wing may have done some of the things in this game a long way back, but so did Freespace 2. I happen to love FS2, but will be very very interested in this game too.

X3 sounds interesting, i’ll be sure to give it a look then. :)

ooshp,

Of course it’s underwhelming, it’s pre-aplpha, at this stage they’re working on getting all the bare basics into the game and are just giving updates on the progress they make to their investors.

Looks great although I don’t like the idea of the x-wing style square canopy on this particular fighter, there is a lot of wasted vision there with the canopy frame. Modern fighter jets went to bubble canopy’s in the late seventies with the F-16 for obvious reasons. You would think the reasons for these military advances would inspire innovation in a futuristic style fighter.

I’d like to see a cockpit like the YF-19 in the Macross Plus anime series. eg bubble canopy, transparent panels in the lower cockpit to see below your feet, holographic optically correct HUD etc.

Just saying…..its space….. you need to be able to see all around you.

That was my first thought, though if this is the first bog standard fighter then there needs to be some progression to better things rather than just armour/shields/speed. Little things like better cockpit/HUD would be a nice “realistic” progression.
