Yesterday we reported that Star Citizen was already the biggest crowd-funded game on record, but those last sixteen hours have pushed it well and truly over the line.
Closing out at $6.2 million, Star Citizen has now unlocked over 100 star systems to explore on launch, as well as a full orchestral soundtrack for the game. The largest ship in the game, the Bengal Carrier, has now been unlocked for persistent universe play as well.
Good news for Wing Commander fans: a Squadron 42 mission disk, “Behind Enemy Lines”, will be available to all backers on release. Styled after “The Secret Missions” expansion from the original Wing Commander, “Behind Enemy Lines” will be a 16-mission campaign add-on. To celebrate, why not enjoy this video that shows the game transitioning from concept art to 3D reality?

Wow that is awesome news.
Can someone elaborate on star systems? star system = solar system?
Glad i made my contribution to this. Hope its going to be awesome.
Yes that is correct.
Is there a projected release date for this?
Are they really going to lock the 16 bonus missions out to all people who didn’t back it, or are they going to charge Aussies a leg and a nose for ‘DLC’.
early 2014
Not sure. On robertsspaceindustries.com they haven’t really said anything in regard to those people who where not part of the original kickstarter campaign if they will incur an extra DLC charge for those missions or how you will get them if you didn’t contribute.
shlaimon,
technically no the solar system is our star system.
Looks like they’re still accepting pledges. Up to $6.31 mill
I’m at a total loss as to understand your comment about “Aussies”. The DLC will more than likely be a paid mission pack for the game post release that backers will be getting for free. Why would the lock people out of one of their only ongoing sources of funding? (Paid additions).
Wow. Elite: Dangerous is going to have to be something special to compete with this. Looks phenomenal!
so strange question, but anyone else notice that videos on this site are a bit jerky?
i can watch vids on other sites at 1080 vithout so much as a buffering but the last few weeks this one.
Yea they reckon they will keep it open for the next year to anybody who wants to upgrade pledges , but not accepting new ones.
Opps I was wrong they will accept new pledges but they will cost more and they wont get some extras like lifetime insurance etc.
Same here mate, all other sites are fine. But on GON when watching linked movies I get ‘hitching’ every few seconds even with a fully buffered movie.
Aren’t space sims suppose to be dead? :P
dead to the publishers…
it was never dead to the fans of the genre naturally given the way fans kept things like Freespace open source project alive…
Star Citizen have the extra advantage in that the various fans of the space sims (regardless if they like WC or not) will most likely see it as one of the only few options left to jump start the genre again.
Between this and Elite, there isn’t much other options left to the old fans of space sims…
X series aint one, nor is any other space sims (there were actually a handful from various european studios in the last few years, but sadly they were mostly abysmal).
mrthumpy,
cool than it wasnt my end. thnx
Isn’t PC gaming supposed to be dead?
Nope.avi
Sorry, my comment was more a joke as of course they’re not dead, this kickstarter being the biggest one yet proves as much.
Haha i know, i was tagging along ;)
