Origin accounts allegedly being hijacked, EA denies any hack has taken place

Hackers

Eurogamer is reporting today that some Origin users are receiving emails notifying them that their password has been successfully changed… by somebody else.

A thread on NeoGAF is rounding up cases from the official EA forums of the hack, and one GAF user was able to track down the Russian email address that their account had now been linked to. Other people including Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry are posting proof of the emails they’ve received, showing clearly that their password is now gone.

Meanwhile, EA is denying that there has been any hack of their systems, saying “At this point, we have no reason to believe there has been any intrusion into our Origin database.” The implication, then, is that this is some sort of exploit of the client or perhaps a social engineering hack in order to get the email changed, but we’re waiting for more details.

Good timing as I remember my Origin password is a month old I now have reset it. I think that social engineering is something a lot of companies tend to ignore. Have you seen how easy it is to get answers to some of Facebooks secret questions? You can basically in some cases just read a friends profile for say their dogs name and use that to get in. A custom Secret question should be the norm as an option imo.

oh no a hacker with a balaclava is stealing mah origins!!11

LOL my account was hacked…

You have to create a new account just so that you can tell them that your other account was hacked.

I have been waiting almost 6 weeks for a response to my ticket..

According to the Origin forums not only are they able to change your e-mail and password but your DOB too. So when you try to prove who you are the dummies in a Chinese/Indian help desk just go in circles with you.

There is another post on there telling them that it is the Russian’s and that they are selling the accounts.

If you post on the Origin forums the mods tell you to create a ticket.
If you create a ticket it is ignored.
If you try live chat it doesn’t work. (tried 10 times myself)
If you try live chat and do get to speak to someone… Tough luck…
They no speak’a da English… Sorry that’s not your password or DOB. Bye.

CAUSE THEY CHANGED IT YOU DUMB #@$@# !

EA really need to work on solving this issue instead of trying to sweep it under the rug like they appear to be doing. Surely Origin accounts have more information to rely on that DOB or a password, such as a credit card if you’ve used one.

$2.48/min? That is some expensive phone technology they must use. That or they double as a phone sex line.

I know with Blizzard, if anything goes completely wrong, they fall back to the serial number of a game you bought to help identify it is your account.

A relative of mine who had not played WoW since BC expansion, came back to find his account hacked and he fortunately still had the original WoW discs and codes. Once he told them the codes, he had no problem getting his account back.

Good luck with EA support….

I was thinking more along the lines of small claims court.

File against them for the cost of the game and the expansion. (BF3)
Then claim $100×30 hours for my lost stats. $3,000
Then time on the forums, time to fill in court documents etc.

Once you send them the claim they have 21 days to sort it out with you or go to court.
If they don’t show up in court you win.

they can have mine…..

What I think is going on is that hackers are socially engineering their victims into giving up certain details (or gathering details from social networking sites or other accounts in the case of some victims such as our own Bennett Ring) which they then use to impersonate the victims when talking to EA Support.

This is just typical EA and Origin at work.

Might has well have hacked my account…. 6+ months and still waiting for them to re-apply Mass Effect 3 to my account (with all pre-order bonuses) after they removed it after a false accusation of fraud…. just about ready to have a second case with the Consumer Tribunal and just get my f–king money back instead. Get the refund on BF3 as well since I’m done with this Origin crap…

LOL, “Oh noes! Someone stole my malware account” Well to bad about your money, It is however your own fault for being stupid enough to give it to them. You never owned any of those games you “brought” anyhow so your not really loosing anything.
Maybe now people will stop using it… ? Naw…
*giggle giggle giggle* this just made my day a little better.

Although It wouldn’t be the first time a multi-conglomerate has been hacked and denied it until they are forced to admit it…
