In a staggering display of consumerism, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has made more than half a billion dollars in its first 24 hours of sale, delivering the biggest entertainment launch of the year, for the fourth consecutive year. Millions stayed up late to attend over 16,000 midnight launches and the game was a top trending topic on Twitter in 23 cities.
“Call of Duty has become more than a product people buy, it’s a brand people buy into. And every November we do more than just the launch of a game, we kick off an annual, unofficial but worldwide phenomenon called the Call of Duty season,” CEO of Activision Publishing Eric Hirshberg claimed, happily.
“I want to thank our incredible team at Treyarch for making an amazing game, everyone at Activision for making this brand a force of nature and our retail partners for their unprecedented support of this franchise. But most importantly I want to thank our millions of fans for their continued support and loyalty and for making us better every day.”

this makes me really sick, it really does.
to think that there are that many sheep out there in the world that are willing to pay for this regurgitated crap.
as much as i dont like activision, kudos to them for exploiting all these ppl for all of that cash.
Or maybe it’s a game that a lot of people enjoy playing. You know, like any popular video game series.
It doesn’t make me sick people have bought it as it’s a new game, something (albeit slightly) different, what makes me sick are the people who paid $89, $99 or more for it on Steam. That is sickening.
sane,
Yeah, the price gouging is the worst part. A yearly install of a popular franchise, borderline expected, to be fair, at least they’ve spiced things up a little bit with the whole future thing, as opposed to Modern Warfare Clone #4 making its way to a store near you.
I’ve bought games for a 1/4 of the price that I’ve played on and off for longer than since the yearly COD’s began.
/shrugs
If people feel they got their money`s worth good for them. There are more important and worthy things to feel “sick” over…
Just goes to show you can charge more in AU and people keep on supporting that model. As do they keep on supporting watered down gameplay, PC match making and lack of free unranked dedicated servers and server browsers.
Spoze its the money of the console/cod generation to waste on crap games.
I just hope that in time if a good Australian dev were to come along, people would show them just as much support as they have here with Activision.
Getting really sick of seeing this because our industry is fucked, meanwhile Activision is reporting record profits..
They make the games, people buy the games. I used to hate developers/publishers who keep pumping out the same game with only slight changes each year, but then again, it’s a business model which seems to work rather well. They’re in the business of making money, and why would they stop the gravy train when it’s clear people apparently haven’t gotten tired of the CoD formula yet?
You can argue all you like about the state of the industry, but no-one is putting a gun to the heads of consumers. If people want to keep buying the same game, even if it results in more original, better games failing because of a lack of marketing and attention, then we only have ourselves to blame.
We wanted mainstream acknowledgement of our little hobby – now we’ve got it. And people choose what they know, what they are exposed to and hence enjoy the most, which is CoD. You can’t really do anything to MAKE people try something different.
ElectroTyrian,
So basically you’re saying that complete and utter stagnation in culture is perfectly fine and that no one should even bother trying to change anything…
Rather defeatist isn’t it? essentially you’re suggesting any attempts to even try and change people’s taste in gaming is futile. We wanted legitimacy in the form of being considered art.. COD does nothing to further this, h
Oh please. One franchise pumping out the same game over and over again does not represent the entire gaming industry. We as gamers are more spoilt than ever over the variety of games we can play, from both indie and big name developers. New and wonderful games are still being produced. People dislike the COD franchise with a vengeance because of it’s supposed influence on the direction of gaming yet paradoxically they’re giving this franchise way more credit than it’s due.
Prior to crowdsourcing I would’ve said you’re totally wrong Ralph, yeah new wonderful games are coming out, but about 4-5 years ago that wasn’t the case.. studios were closing left and right, Activision was reporting record profits..
Its a bit different now.. but back then I justify the hatred fully. Especially when Australia’s industry was on fire… but who gives a shit COD JUST SOLD 300 Million!..
This kind of crap is why people hate COD, there are so many deserving developers out there that really needed people’s support back then, they didn’t get it.. if people has stopped being so damn shallow back then I doubt Australia’s industry would be in the state its in right now.
Just thank fuck we’ve got Crowdsourcing initiatives now that work.. without those we’d be royally screwed.
Still don’t get the COD hate, if people buy COD why can’t they buy other games and support other developers? I do. Seems a bit silly to think that gamers would only play COD.
Melodrama aside, it’s actually a pretty good game, especially the multiplayer.
Check out my review if you’re keen.

I hate to nitpick on dates but most of the butthurt with the COD franchise started with Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, when they shafted PC users with the lack of dedicated servers (boy was that like poking a stick in a hornets nest) and it was the start of the cookie cutter gameplay. So if shit games and closing developers were occurring more than 3 years ago its not COD’d fault is it? People seem to forget over and over again that if a business model is successful why change it? Why risk the billions of dollars flowing from bottom up (gaming stores, warehouse workers, shipping, programmers, marketing and yes, the fat cats at the top). Again I point to some of the great games which have occurred after MW2 – Deus Ex:HR, Arma 2, Borderlands, Dishonoured…all are wildly different themed FPS and in no way COD clones.
As for the state of the Australian gaming industry, it’s not the only Australian industry in the crapper and again I find it hard to believe one franchise is responsible for its woes.
Crap double post. Can an admin please delete.
Should be noted I wasn’t saying that COD was to blame, rather consumers were to blame for continuing to run to the same product year after year. I just think its extremely defeatist for Australians to praise COD- yet they don’t show anywhere near the praise for a local production.
Its the exact same with our Film industry, people would rather see a shit fest Holywood high budget film over a deep meaningful Australian film.. I really don’t get it.
ralphwiggum,
I gotcha Ralphy!
Love all these posts by people hating the game when they haven’t played it.
I didn’t get a copy of it but I’m not going to rag on it purely because of it’s name. Sure it’s pretty likely it will be generic crap, but how the hell do you know?
So sick of this whole “LIKE WHAT I LIKE OR YOU’RE AN IDIOT” BS.
Gammad, have you considered that people consume media and entertainment for reasons other than your own? Like escapism for instance? Not everyone wants their gaming or movie experience to be deep and meaningful. I’ve always likened COD to Michael Bay films. Big, dumb loud and predictable but entertaining if that’s what you’re looking for. Their box office success in no way diminishes the quality or praise of smaller, indie productions. But don’t hate producers for giving the mass market what it wants and is lining up to pay for.
I’m not hating on the producers.. I’m hating on the community and the consumer for being too shallow to actually try something new and allowing people with really good intentions to end up failing because they didn’t support it as they were too busy playing COD to give a fuck.
Jesus man, it’s a free world, don’t hate people for making their choice. Buying COD doesn’t preclude people from playing other games too. The success of Minecraft and DayZ is testament to that.
unless you support every kickstarter in existence, I would kindly ask you to shut your mouth.
also, did you know a person can play more than one game in a given day or week?
I’m kind of tempted to check it out, but I know I’ll play through the single player campaign in maybe 6 or 7 hours, play one match of multiplayer and then feel completely ripped off like I did with the last bunch of COD games.
i know im gonna get a lot of hate for this, but i actually like this one over the last cod release, i wasn’t gonna buy it cause i hate it becoming ea sport / need for speed another game every second week +1, but i had spare cash, and found it enjoyable over mw 2 and 3′s ‘murica fuck yeah attitude. Colour me stupid or blind gamer consumerism but i actually enjoyed the game so far.
That’s why I’ve never paid more than $50 for any COD game. I only play SP and steer clear of MP. According to Steam I’ve played 4 hours of MW3. Woot.
