Thinking of backing Star Citizen, the ambitious PC-championing space-sim from Chris Roberts of Wing Commander fame? We are, and we have — in fact so many people have backed the game, either on the official site or the Kickstarter page that it’s now the biggest crowd-funded game on record with over $5 million raised.
So what does this new milestone mean? Well at $4.5 million, the game is now going to have full flight sim controller support: flight chairs, multiple monitors, Track-IR, MFD and more. The largest playable ship in the game has also been scaled up to the new Destroyer, an additional base type and an entirely new alien race have been added.
Now, at $5 million, the game will also include a tablet companion app to check on your inventory, commission or find missions and get the galactic news feed, increased community updates, at least one celebrity favourite voice actor returning from Wing Commander, and a guaranteed 70 star systems to explore on launch.
Pledging as little as $37 gets you access to the alpha and beta, so get cracking!

The interwebs has spoken. We WANT A GOOD SPACE SIM.
*drool* This is going to be epic, just upgraded my thingo to $60.
“at least one celebrity favourite voice actor returning from Wing Commander”
Hoping for Mark Hamil or at the very least Thomas F. Wilson
Oh, they just announced a $6 million stretch goal. Dammit, now i want that full orchestral score.
No matter how far in they get, even standing right now, this is going to be something special.
Now all we need is some way to get it made within 6 months and still be an awesome game!
Oh goddamn it I am so psyched for this! I bought Wing Commander 1-4 from GOG and forgot how much fun pew pewing stuff in space is :) Very tempted to bump my pledge up from the $35 digital scout edition. However knowing that I can get stuff later on I’ll just leave it as is :) Bring it on!!!
Multi manned bombers??? here we come… my flight buddies are all ready…
Are we going to set up a GON squadron? :P
Or even a GON server with customisations.
bronzed,
Not to mention ships like the Constellation, a 4 man ship with it’s own personal fighter. I’m going to pimp mine out for exploration.
at the 5.5mil mark they’re bringing in playable Carriers like those in the picture, which Chris Roberts basically said was a mobile base for Guilds.
$250 well spent.
darthlondar,
My vote is for Tom Wilson. I love that guy.
It’d be weird to have the Heart of the Tiger talking to me while doing missions :P
There’s a lot of pressure on them to make an out standing game now.
kinkykel,
It would be great to see a larger number of those vessels, especially for clan battles. Not quite like EVE, but something more managable. If you’ve ever played Homeworld 2 you’ll know there are Fighters/Bombers, Corvettes, Frigates, Carriers, Destroyers and Battleships. Essentially I’d like to see that, where for clan play 2-4 players would pilot a corvette, 5 or so command a carrier + crew for fighters, Destroyers manned by about 6, and then about 8 for a battlecruiser. Different manning stations could include anti-capital weapons (such as iron cannons, heavy missiles), anti-fighter weapons (flak guns), navigation (the actual pilot) and a targeter/sighter who would relay targets to other players and perhaps an engineer (could be combined with the targeter) to effectively manage shields and power outputs to different systems.
Combine that with possible Marine frigates and you could have other players storm a battle cruiser or carrier with small arms, take out the fighter crews, or take out specific systems/crew and leave a ship dead in the water or with certain systems down. Of course, just like in Homeworld, actually getting your ship docked to your target would be a feat in itself, so having a co-ordinated effort to take over command of an enemy ship would be a tremendous accomplishment.
But I suspect I am day dreaming.
TrackIR support?
They just won me over. I’ll happily pay retail for it once it gets here.
doho,
Actually mate, what you’re talking about is their vision. That’s what they want from this game. I know with the ship I’m getting it can handle 4 people on board, 1 pilot two for turrets and the other one for the fighter that the ship carries. Thos two on the turrets can all be used for boarding parties to take control of ships.
So yes, what you’re saying is what they want. They’ll also be setting up persistant servers for their side of things, plus from what I understand people can set up their own servers? Not 100% sure on that though.
You can set up your own server doho.
i dunno what their upper limit goal is, but from what i gathered corvette is the largest size ship players can man or directly fly in the game in the current plan that i’ve known of.
They technically could handle the capital ship in various manner of course, but chances are we don’t directly fly the ship itself for the capital ships… which kinda makes sense given that the capital ships don’t exactly have a maneuver worth mentioning… or rather they maneuver like an oil tanker, not exactly a ship that requires a human to fly properly.
Alright, all these repeat games.on.net posts finally convinced me to contribute. Let the anticipation begin!
And it just hit $5.5 mil.
Now to get that orchestral score.
yeeeahhhhhhh!
*cheers*
bronzed,
5.5mil secured the Bengal Carrier as a playable ship. Not sure how that’s going to happen, but it sounds like we’ll actually be able to fly the bastards. Destroyers have been unlocked aswell as playable.
“full flight sim controller support: flight chairs, multiple monitors, Track-IR, MFD and more” … and now they have my money
The email they sent out this morning thanking everyone that contributed gives a hint of the enthusiasm in the dev studio atm, should be a great ride.
$6.2 million raised in total!!
I stand corrected,
i checked for more information on the chat with Christ Roberts as well and apparently there are a total of 3 bengal carriers available for capture from the Navy (we can’t make one as players ourselves)…
So if a clan wants one for example they’d have to setup a plan to ambush, disable and board the carrier and somehow defeat the crew inside to wrestle control for it… it looks like
the plan for corvette being the largest available was actually upgraded to cruiser in one of the milestone hit by the stretch goals but i can’t find any accurate data on how exactly they are handled..
i suspect it will be similar with the carrier in that technically corvettes will be the largest player ships that we can technically manufacture and modify and own ourselves, while the carrier and i presume the cruisers as well are existing ships on the world (belonging with the navy or otherwise) that have to somehow be brought to control to the player or group of players.
interesting, with only 3 carriers up for grabs … might be prudent to get in early GoNers .. we should all organise to hit a carrier then take it deep into a nebula so it can never be found :P
And man .. 6.2mil raised .. thats alot of money man. I look forward to the updates, the fleshing out of the universe. It’s going to be fun!
