I think the biggest litmus test that a game is still ok in this generation would be to sit somebody who's possibly too young to remember it the first time and sit them down to play it. If the only complaint that they can come up with is "the graphics suck lol" then perhaps you can start with the "old games have better gameplay" shtick.

Otherwise, pull off the rose-tinted glasses and take a good look. Yes there are old games that are awesome even today. However for every game in the past that was awesome there's 2-3 games that would be judged as instantly forgettable if released today with better graphics. Plus there are many games that take those awesome games of the past and do it better, but because everybody is focused on "they don't make 'em like that any more" the flaws are overlooked.

So in summary, old games aren't entirely as good as you remember.

I do feel a lot of games these days, especially the mainstream ones focus more on graphics etc then gameplay. Whereas the games from my Atari and Super Nintendo days had great gameplay. I think that is why I am liking indie games more than the mainstream games these days, they have that great gameplay.

So I don't think its nostalgia for me at all. I just want great gameplay. Graphics etc are secondary.
