Total War: Rome II footage takes in the Battle of Carthage

Hannibal of Carthage’s drawn out campaigns against Rome are the sort of thing that leads to academics getting over-excited and dipping tweed elbows in spilled ale. Assuming you’re not a mad history buff, you’ll still find plenty of interest in this nine minute look at battle gameplay from Total War: Rome II. There’s plenty of galley action of course; ever since The Creative Assembly started in on boats it’s never really looked back. Watch the glorious evening sun set over sparkling waves as two ancient civilizations beat the snot out of each other for your gratification. This is living. Rome II is expected in 2013.

can’t wait, video even states that they’re “way way pre-alpha” so should be even better.

Late 2013 can’t come soon enough!

Yeah, but uhhh gritty and realistic does not really need to equal BROWN does it?

i mean it’s just a nagging concern to an otherwise decent showcase of the game, but i honestly cannot for the love of god understand why developers love so much to put these excessive color filters over their game and wash out all the color and contrast…

are they so terrified that the game is not artsy enough to catch the eye with normal color range?

I hate how TrollWarCentre (as I call it, and is the main forum for TW fans) people complain about this and that not looking good but its not even an Alpha build yet so its pretty naive to judge it purely on that.

Also this was on Gamespot yesterday but the damn video wouldnt work for me in anything other than Chrome. Glad it got to Youtube where it works properly.

bronzed,

Well this video took place in the city of Carthage, and that was north Africa. So what you’re seeing is more sandy. Of course there was quite a bit of variation in the geography of the ancient world, so you should be going from sandy plains to the forests of Germania, just like the original game. Developed by CA Brisbane, NOT UK, no matter what the video says.

I tried to watch the movie, but the guy presenting it thoroughly annoyed me. The amount of time he said gritty and dark not to mention to constant umms and ahhs drove me up the wall.

Game looks alright, as was mentioned, very pre alpha. Not super excited though.

Oh sure, but sand or not, the effect doesn’t produce the natural result…

Sandy region doesn’t LOSE the color range, it just means that you proportionally see enough sand that they comprise a good majority of the object and color composition, but it does not contaminate the color of the other objects in general except where it’s sensible, you don’t get the same result by just plastering the whole scene brown with a filter where you effectively washes out the other colors.

It’s the same problem with most games plastering similar filter (including BF3)

it just washes out a good chunk of the color and i cannot comprehend why they think it’s good to do so.

It all comes down to personal opinion I guess. Personally I like how they’ve approached the color scheme. Of course some people are always going to have liked it with more color but that’s just the way the dev’s went because that’s how they prefer it.

Also, I wouldn’t worry too much because if enough people in the modding community share your view they’ll come up with a solution pretty quick (think they’ve done this for BF3).

I keep meaning to get into a Total War game but I think this might be the one as I love the era itself more so than any of the other eras (Medieval comes close).

I’m not *completely* fussed over the filters, who knows maybe it’ll be toned down by release, but as said above I can almost guarantee there will be mods to remove them.
