The War Z now available to pre-order, alpha players begin at end of October

The War Z

The War Z is coming out the doors faster than anybody anticipated, and is now offering a variety of ways in which you can preorder. Survivor tier ($19.49) gets you in at the end of October, while Pioneer ($29.99) and Legend ($49.99) tiers will get you in as of October 15.

Pioneer and Legend tiers offer “Stronghold map hosting” of one and six months respectively, with Legend tiers giving you a highlighted name in chat and on leaderboards. Which is, you know, nice.

These prices are available until October 20, so if you start hearing people saying good things come October 15, you’ve got a few days to check it out.

Does GoN know how the pricing structure (if any) will operate for tWZ?

I am also confused at what exactly “Stronghold map hosting” even is…

I’ve been wondering about these too.

Pricing structure is a one off payment. i.e. you buy the game, no sub fees. They also plan to release extra content such as new maps at no extra cost.

Stronghold map hosting is where you rent a smaller server, iirc 4km squared, which you can use to establish a base etc. You can leave it completely open to the public or lock down parts of it as you see fit. Normally you have to pay to rent these but if you get the two higher preorder packs, you get to use them for free for a certain period of time.

There is a video interview/gameplay on ign with sergio (the main dev), which explains the stronghold servers a bit better.

I’m actually happy Bohemia is getting allot of limelight/money thanks to DayZ, we need more developers/Publishers like them in my opinion.

Correction to my comment. The lead dev is Sergey lol.

Something Day Z always needed was hideouts… and the ability to craft items (e.g. wire and sandbags to make a fence, rods and canvas to make a tent). Good to see War Z fulfills at least one of these. Love the ideas of having a locked safehouse.. and if you keep it unlocked, would be nice to have some sort of siege-battle mechanic.

Now I just need for someone to tell me what the gameplay is like and I’m in.

Not too happy about 3rd person view.

It’s usually what I prefer to use in ArmA!

If people are interested here’s the yt link to the vid I was referring too

Goes for about 20 mins and is pretty interesting. It has gameplay footage for all 20 mins.

I’m wary of the “currency system” they describe.
While they are at pains to point out that it can be ignored, we have seen in other games how tailoring design around real money can damage a game.
Also money in a zombie-infested world seems out of place.

it’s a player rebuilt society … you need something to barter with would you suggest bottle caps ?

Actually no, it’s free to play style. You can buy new high powered weapons, but if you die, you lose them.

Also, this game is going to be bad.

You can’t buy weapons, or high end ammo.

And now I know…
