I agree with aliendream. I never thought I would use a laptop as my primary system but I've got it setup just like a desktop and I get the added benefits of psuedo UPS and portability. With increased processing power in mobiles I can see the same thing eventually happening. Asus has already created a 10.1 inch screen where you dock an android phone in to create a tablet demonstrating the ability to use an alternative display and input.

Agreed, however it's not the end of the story.

More and more people are realising now that we are not in a 'post-pc' era but we are in the midst of a new form-factor emerging for our desktop devices. The future is *not* about replacing your mouse and physical keyboard with a touchscreen but instead augmenting it from the perspective of a mobile form-factor.

Your 'PC' will be your primary mobile device in the form/size of our current mobile phones, which makes calls and docks to your desktop monitor, keyboard and mouse, giving you a full desktop PC experience - or docks to your TV and game controller etc. So it's not about nerfing your PC, it's about making it more flexible and portable. I'm sure you've seen the demo performed with the Motorola Atrix sharing its Linux kernel with Ubuntu in desktop mode when docked. Microsoft are obviously trying their own thing with this in Windows 8.

Yes, desktop PCs are much more powerful right now because they don't have to concern themselves with power consumption and heat generation, nearly as much as a mobile device but let's not forget how quickly things are moving.

I cringe when I hear people talk about the so-called 'post-pc' era - it's simply not true and just a misunderstanding.

I wish someone would put as much effort into PC peripherals as they do to consoles. We have access to vastly more power than consoles, but it seems we're mostly limited to using what's best for consoles gaming. Outside of keyboards and mice with 1000 extra buttons.

There's a lot more you can do creatively with a PC that you can't do on a tablet. Initially I thought having a touch screen, a stylus and a piece of art software would mean the tablet would be the ultimate sketch pad, but I'm yet to find a tablet with a decent level of sensitivity to pull something like that off. So back to pad, pen and scanner I go...

I agree, PC's give me options. Tablets are generally restrictive. There are very few apps out there that you can't get on the market place.

And this is the idea, funnel everyone down one corridor which you control and can get maximum profits from.

A fantastic article, and one I agree with utterly. Whatever upgrades and growths are made in portable tablets in terms of power, they will always be exponentially larger in a proper PC due to the fact it has far less limitations.

When I was in sales, the number of people I had to disabuse of the notion that a tablet was exactly the same as a PC was staggering. Most of the demographic have no idea. They've all bought the jargon, the bollocks and the apple fanatics. When the actual limitations of a tablet is explained to them, they tend to look surprised, and ask 'how do I do DVD playing/burning/Video Editing/Photo Editing/Software?' and I'd tell them - you buy a PC. It seldom resulted in a sale, but I didn't care. I held the truth at a higher level (which is why I'm no longer in sales).

Tablets are assisting tools. Not replacements.
