I love this story, I really do.
Democratic State Senate candidate Colleen Lachowicz has a secret. While other politicians might be hiding secret love children or drug habits, Lachowicz’s secret is far more sinister. “I love poisoning and stabbing! It is fun,” she has been quoted as saying.
That’s right. Democratic State Senate candidate Colleen Lachowicz plays World of Warcraft. Along with 183 million Americans, Lachowicz spends her downtime exploring a fantasy world of orcs, goblins and elves. “Colleen Lachowicz spends hundreds of hours playing in her online world Azeroth, as an Orc Assassination Rogue named Santiaga,” a Republican flyer has to say on the subject.
“The number of hours most World of Warcraft gamers spend playing the game (22.7 per week, on average) and the number it must have taken her to reach such a high level – all raise questions about her work ethic and her ability to devote her time and energy to serving the people of Senate District 25 in a mature and effective manner,” said David Sorenson, a spokesperson for the Maine GOP added, standing by the flyer. As Ars Technica points out, the average American watches more than 30 hours of TV a week.
Now, maybe I’m not the target demographic, being a twenty-something Australian woman, but were I a voting American in Maine, I would totally vote for this woman. Not just because she plays video games, but because she clearly has a sense of humour about the whole thing, and is clearly a real person. “I’m so jealous! I wish I wasn’t at work. I’d much rather be gaming with my guildies!” says one of the online posts Lachowicz is being targeted for (made before she started running for office, it should be pointed out).
Don’t we all feel like that some days? I don’t care if you’re a politician or a garbage man, if you’d rather not be in the office and would rather be slacking off at home, you’re a real person, and you’re all right by me.

I could write some long post about how congress and the senate represent the people and it’s good that they have a wider range of politicians other than old white men.
but American politics is a joke. Republicans are a joke. “Republicans are stupid” isn’t exactly a rare headline these days. unfortunately the wider audience don’t care enough, and the small number of people that can change it will be changing it so they lose their jobs.
At least she doesn’t have an offensive character name or guild name, that would of been far more interesting and more useful to a political smear campaign.
I can imagine it now…..
Hey this lady plays WoW so she can’t do her job! Meanwhile we research about opposition members playing WoW so we can say that she is not doing her job! Our time is well spent researching this heinous activity! We were logged in on our research Guild “Keepers of Our Truth” and saw her undercut at the Auction House, devaluing an entire source of income for other Americans, just like you! do you want someone like this fiscally mismanaging your money America?
If that pamphlet turned up on my doorstep all I would think was “No one chooses the ugly Fem-Orc face”.
Ever get the feeling that politics is mainly a case of “Lets keep the average citizen out of politics by slander campaigns?”

Considering how old wow is, id be curious to know how old she was when making those comments
“We can’t have these silly gamer kids in any position of responsibility and what-not”. We actually have self-confessed gamer politicians in this country. That lot over there in the U.S are weird. So there.
“Along with 183 million Americans, Lachowicz spends her downtime exploring a fantasy world of orcs, goblins and elves”
Where did that stat come from? It sounds a little…suspect. 183 million people is 59% of the population of the US…
c0mc0,
lol which in any kind of electioneering sense would be daft to point out, if true, as it’s saying – “this lady has a lot in common with most Americans”.
lol she would have got my vote with that add ;)
