Preliminary PC specs, modding and microtransaction details revealed for Star Citizen

Star Citizen

Word is on the virtual streets of a new FAQ released for Chris Roberts triumphant return from the gaming wilderness: the space sim known as Star Citizen. The document details not only the preliminary PC specs you’ll need for the game, but also how they feel about modding (very strongly encouraged) and how microtransactions will work.

As the game is based on CryEngine 3, you’ll need something with a bit of heft to get it running. Minimum specs are listed as a dual core CPU, GTX 460, and at least 4GB of system memory. Recommended specs include an i7 2500, 2600, or 2700, and a GTX 670 or better.

The official word on modding is that “Players will be given full control of their game! When operating private servers, players will be able and encouraged to mod the game. It doesn’t stop there, though: we hope to institute a ‘mod approval’ process that will allow the best of the best player created ships and other additions to be integrated into the central persistent world as well.”

On the subject of microtransactions, the FAQ has this to say: “To play Star Citizen you need only to buy the initial game. There will never be a monthly charge for usage. Some in-game items may be available as microtransactions, but we will NEVER sell anything that can’t be acquired through honest (and fun!) gameplay.”

OH GOD. Yup, so. Time to upgrade from my stock 560 then.

Oh dear lord! Time for an upgrade myself. my 560M wont cut that cheese very well. Might go back to Desktops for a while, easier to customise than a laptop.

Yeah this is no laptop game. Especially as it’s CryEngine 3 based ;)

Would love to see a laptop cope with a 7 million poly Carrier :D

On a personal note, it’s about time space became cool again…

Very much looking forward to this game!

Every time I hear about this game he seems to be promising more. If they deliver, great. I’ll certainly buy it. But I’m sure not going to be speculating any money toward something so ambitious.

This game won’t be coming out for a while, so you can hang back on those upgrades for even better stuff when its out!

rsoblivion,

I’d like to see anything cope with 7 million poly’s. Its insane the amount of detail. I don’t care how many fps I get, maximum settings or nothing.

aeolusc,

Don’t think there will be anything new out personally, but at least prices for hardware will drop.

You don’t think there will be any new, cheaper hardware available to buy in the next 12 months? Really?

I imagine they’ll be making a heavy use of tessellation for this. Saw a promo on it on the EVE-Fest this year. looks amazing and runs fairly well.
