Mists of Pandaria moves 2.7 million copies, subscriber base back above 10m

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria

Blizzard have proudly revealed this morning that Mists of Pandaria, the latest expansion in the World of Warcraft franchise, has shipped 2.7 million units in the first week of launch. That number is expected to grow when the figures from the China launch, which occurred on Tuesday, are finally calculated.

As a result, World of Warcraft‘s subscriber base has been pushed back above the 10 million mark — still down from its peak of 12 million in October of 2010, but solid growth from the 9.1 million figure most recently released.

While we work to bring you our final thoughts on the game, Blizzard have announced that they are hard at work on the first major post-launch content update, with more info to come in the weeks ahead.

You forgot to add “They are just the people coming back that quit after every expansion so the numbers will drop again once they ding 90″.

Village idiot

Blizzard made me buy this game even thought I will probably never play it because they have brainwashed me.

This… Then I remembered how appallingly broken the PvP is and uninstalled it, threw away my disks and deleted my authenticator. Now I shall never access my account again! Hopefully…

I’m having a bunch of fun again with it, apparently the dungeons are harder this time around, and the addition of Challenge mode is cool, can’t wait to get into that.

So over 7 million people are playing without the expansion?

spawneh,

Guessing here, but I don’t think they’re counting digital upgrades in that 2.7m

About 6 months ago a friend of mine made me promise to never let him play the game again, he gave me his account so that I could make this happen.

One week ago he was begging me for his account back so he could “try” this new expansion, literally begging me, I did not give in.
He then went and bought a new copy of the game including collectors edition of this panda expansion.

Today he quit the game again and is disgusted and ashamed of himself.
He apologized for begging me for something so stupid.

Good times.

yeapal,

I’ve pretty much done exactly this. First time I deleted my authenticator and therefore couldn’t access my account. Then I wanted to play WoTLK, so I called up Blizzard and removed it. Quit again, threw away my disks so I couldn’t use the CD keys as identification. Then a friend started playing again on Cataclysm’s release, so I rebought the entire series. I unintalled it again after this.

Reinstalled it last week and bought MOP. Already raged from it. Rather pissed with myself. Never again Blizzard!

I’m pretty sure after you’ve started playing WoW for a period of time, Blizzard puts something into your subconscious and whenever a new expansion comes out, it triggers and you can’t help but buy it. I hate it.

Thats bullshit, sorry. I’ve been watching my brother play it and all he does it aoe tanks everything effortlessly.

You dont remember needing to CC 2 mobs in vanilla wow every pull? I’m glad you’re enjoying it though.

Well its no secret that blizzard (and other MMO makers) hire armies of psychologists for the sole purpose of figuring out how to manipulate people into becoming addicted and playing for as long as possible.

I hate to break it to you, but using crowd control isn’t an indication of difficulty. Also 5 man dungeons have never needed CC, I used to DPS tank all the dungeons as a Warrior in vanilla with no problem.

That pretty much describes me spot on. I always go back at expansion time to hit 90 and then lose interest

Valve also have a few psychologists as well to get you to use their Steam service as much as possible.

It’s scary what the big boys will do for the almighty dollar.
