Riot Games has released a fascinating infographic detailing the achievements of its free-to-play MOBA, League of Legends. The highly competitive title has 70 million registered players, but counts its active player base at 32 million per month. That’s a tremendous jump since Riot last tipped its hand in November 2011, announcing a player base of 11 million.
League of Legends now attracts 12 million players each day and has a peak concurrency of 3 million; players tot up over 1 billion hours played every month, which Riot helpfully contrasts to the total time ever spent on Halo games – 2 billion hours. All this adds up to a bold claim: League of Legends is “the most played video game in the world”. Wow.
Season Two of League of Legends is drawing to a close, with global finals scheduled for October 13. This season boasted the largest prize pool in eSports history: $5 million dollars total, with a cool $1 million for the world champions. League of Legends is also a growing segment of Major League Gaming.

Highly recommend the SEA servers on Garena. Loving the 60 ping from WA.
You can transfer your account but not sure if it’s up as I done it 8 months ago.

I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.
Eeew these games are awful, they could do so much more with them but they dont. How about diablo style heroes we can lvl up and get loot etc and then pvp with in MOBA type battlegrounds. If they added MOBA pvp to diablo where we play our own heroes and creeps dropped loot… ummm would it not be amazing?
PvE into MOBA games is generally counter productive from the dev point of view unless there’s a massive return from it that will be worth the investment.
why? because PvE materials cost a truck load to produce in time and resource, and the whole point why a lot of F2P dev goes the MOBA PvP path is because it’s low on resource and time consumption.
Diablo has sale profit to draw from that can compensate the cost of the production of the whole PvE material (and then it makes more from the real money auction house in the case of D3).
But MOBA PvP games exist at all through the draw of F2P, they can’t put a price tag on their entry or they essentially die, so in this case at least such approach is not gonna work unless you can find a source of investment.
“All this adds up to a bold claim: League of Legends is “the most played video game in the world”. Wow”
*cough* WoW *cough*
I think they need to wait a few more years before topping the ‘total time spend in a video game franchise’ list
The same reason CoD is the most popular FPS, it caters for stupids.
I’m curious as to whether the current hate towards the game is because the above posters actually don’t like the game and think there are serious problems with it or because they think it’s the in thing to hate on the popular thing even when they know nothing about it.
@exe3
I don’t like bad games.
Used to play LoL heaps, like 4 hours a day hahaha, loved it but after 1000+ games gets abit stale. Whats the reason in particular for the hate, im curious to know?
Also “Odds of getting a pentakill 1 in every 1500 games”, my odds 4 per 1000 :P hehe
snex,
And why is LoL bad?
It’s not bad, HoN and DoTA players are just mad cause their games are borderline dead.
@exe3
Lol isn’t so much bad as it’s poorly designed. the real problem, which a lot of people don’t like is Riot itself, they got bought out by Tencent around Feb last year and since then they have done everything possible to make as much money as possible, at the expense of every thing else.
A lot of fanboys like Generalherpes here don’t understand whats happening outside their poorly designed game. as people have said already, they have a lot of people playing but that doesn’t make it a well designed game look at the call of duty franchise, League does something similar, releasing generic champions every 2 to 3 weeks, they have to keep up this release cycle or everything collapses on itself, because it’s the model Riot have encouraged and now if anything changes their playerbase gets shitty and complains.
Aside from that Riot has been doing some pretty low stuff recently, eg: trying to make teams sign exclusivity contracts with them. so they can only play League of Legends as their only MOBA game, so not HoN or Dota/Dota 2, also not allowing barcraft events if the event shows stuff besides League of Legends. their complany is based around a infinite growth cycle, which does not exist in any business, or any game, WoW is starting to slow down, Riot can’t keep this up, so they are pumping as much cash into the game as possible, just because they have a lot of players doesn’t make it a good game, so take this how you will.
Last I heard Riot is NOT forcing people to only play LoL. There were miscommunications or something where people thought that was the case but it isn’t.
I don’t honestly see how Tencent buying them out has amounted to much. Sure all the champs release at 6300ip now but tbh that’s not THAT big a deal, as long as older champs get price reductions I see no issue. Yeah i’ve had the feelings of them doing dodgy stuff as well (KhaZix skin costing more than usual) but on the whole I feel the reasons for some things are at least passable even if I don’t think highly of them.
No game is perfect so of course there’s sometimes lame champs but do you really consider recent champs like Zyra or Syndra to be generic champs? On top of that there have been outright COUNTLESS times where Riot has ignored the outcries of the community over certain changes eg: the sustain and jungle remakes. Finally on this champ releases have started to slow a bit lately (maybe due to the championship I don’t know) and they are prepared for an eventual slowing of champion releases.
Now i’m not defending Riot or LoL, I dang well know LoL has countless issues. What I am doing is criticising the hate people are throwing at it as while the game is full of problems on the whole it can be a damn fun game and any hate i’ve seen so for against LoL comes across as “we hate popular things or stuff we don’t play!” rather than of legitimate concerns over the quality of the game.
as far as exclusive contract is concerned though… that’s pretty much the point…
i mean that’s the same as with ANY similar contract with roughly similar goal and purpose, we don’t exactly consider it strange that when someone signed on to a contract that promotes product X that they can’t promote product Y (which essentially is what it is, ie: the teams are basically sport players and what they play is essentially what they represent)
I mean i don’t exactly like Riot, but if that’s all they did then that’s basically the same thing as other sports and i don’t understand why that’s ‘evil’ or what not given that it’s business common sense.
exe3,
Let me rephrase.
As a competitive game, as an “esport”, LoL is bad. I don’t actually like the genre itself that much, but I’m continually impressed by the shit that DotA players are able to pull off. LoL? Nah, not at all. I’d rather watch Halo.
As a game? Yeah, it’s pretty good. It’s kind of like TF2. As long as you don’t give a fuck, it’s all good.
I’m ultra-elitist, however, so I just can’t have fun with those kind of games.
Why the fuck doesn’t bbcode work with this shit? Can’t even edit my post. Fucking christ.
LoL is easier to play then dota/dota2/HoN thats why its more popular. Just like CoD is easier then bf and more popular where theres less effort to feel good about winning people will go.
shlaimon,
If it’s so easy why aren’t you singing up and winning all these huge price money tournaments?
Delusional comments.
generalherpes,
because he/she might feel really dirty playing a sub-par game. your responses just further reinforce what has been said here, Call of Duty Players sound exactly the same as you do now, if anyone here has delusions it’s clearly you who idolize a company who denies every shred of bad PR, creates sub-standard additions to your game, and tries to achieve an impossible dream of infinite growth in a game that has been designed from the ground up to be played by stupid people with lots of money, similar to Diablo 3.
I’d highly recommend playing Dota 2 and seeing where you stand among that community before you start saying that you’re all this amazing, and as far as your high level players are concerned, that can’t hold a candle to the high level players of Dota 2, so maybe get off your high horse sooner rather than later.
crimsonblue,
I tried DoTA 2 and it’s awful and clunky with 1 shot ultimates. Not to mention omming after 2 spells.
Also LOL has actual champion names unlike “anti-mage”, “lifestealer” etc. A 10 year old could literally come up with better names.
DoTA 2 has one good thing and that’s the graphics, but that’s about it. It will always have a small elitist playerbase.
I play what’s fun and DoTA 2 isn’t fun for me and millions of other players. Just look at HoN and see how popular it is considering it’s almost a mirror image of DoTA 2.
BTW if it’s an easy/noob game etc, why do you win all the tournaments then?
