Introducing the Community Soapbox: Now taking submissions

Community Soapbox

Every so often, I get a message from one of our many forum members, or an email out of the blue, with an epic rant in it. What BioWare did wrong with Mass Effect 3, what BioWare did right with Mass Effect 3 and why everybody else is wrong, an opinion piece on DRM, or even just an essay about why they love a game they love.

There’s never really been a place to put these on games.on.net and so we very rarely get to use them, but as of now I’m going to change that. Say hello to…

The Community Soapbox

What’s it all about then? Well, once a month (at least — hopefully more) we’ll try and publish an article by a member of the community on the front page of games.on.net. Consider this an open call for expressions of interest: if you’ve got an opinion about something or want to share with the world, or maybe you’ve written a review of an obscure game you’re dying to see in print, this is your chance.

If you’re interested in being a part of it, head on over to our forum and send me a PM about it. We’re open to all subjects and topics, though please be aware your submission will of course be edited for spelling, grammar and so on in accordance with our general standards of content.

Please note this is unfortunately not a paid position! But we do not seek to take advantage of anybody — your submissions can be as small or as big as you like, on anything at all.

Sounds great! I’m really angry/passionate/incredulous about X!

I’m glad to hear it! Send me a PM and let’s talk about it! If you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask them below or in the forum thread. Looking forward to hearing from you all!

I’ll submit an article to the soapbox, about the soapbox! ;D

I might not have anything to say right now, but every other month or so I find something that needs to be said. If fifa13 continues to annoy me it may well be the next item to talk about.

Then I can submit an article to the soapbox about bennyburner’s article that was submitted to the soapbox about the soapbox!

Well this is just going to encourage me.

I cannot see this being a good thing…

vcatkiller,

This is starting to sound suspiciously like letters to the editor.

Yes. Yesyesyesyesyes. And for good measure, YES. Now, to write stuff!

Just feel free to copy/paste any of my rants from the forums. XD

Sounds like fun, I might have to write up something over my Summer break from uni. The question is however, where to start? So much to get angry/passionate/incredulous about, so little time to write about how angry/passionate/incredulous I am…

I was going to say we need to lock you up first :P I’m looking forward to a full length exe rant on the front page!!

Good idea guys, looking forward to seeing what the community can produce :)

Oh I like this idea, it will be good to get the community voice out there, nice work :)

Looking forward to reading what you crazy bastards come up with :)

3000 words in so far… hope there really isn’t a limit on this thing.

Now this is a step in the right direction GON.

Somebody give Nemmy his own soapbox, or there won’t be any room left for everyone else. :P

yurtles,

In a round-a-bout kind of way it probably is. Kind of.

Might have to try and write an article myself sometime. Whether it gets published or not, just the act of attempting to write an article would be rather a nice diversion I think.

Rain on parade coming in…..3….2….. ;)

4000 words. I’ll trim it out and weld it into greater coherency a bit later… then start on the next one!

this is good to see

I couldn’t even manage 3,000 for a my final assessment piece this year :|

tera,

But that just means you have better things to do. Whereas I’m a nerd who finds typing ‘fun’ when I know what it really means is that I’m just weird. :P

Just wondering if topics such as the NBN or something like Magic TG would be in scope for an article.

Absolutely foxtel, anything related to games, hardware, technology, gaming culture — it’s all open. If you ever want to chat, send me a PM!

Love the idea, sounds good :D

I’m not sure if playing League of Legends could be classified as better, but it sure was a lot more entertaining, haha.

So, anyone else submitted something? And what sort of turnaround are we looking at if something goes through? Currently trying a second piece out, might like it more than the first.

Hey nemesis, I’ve got your pieces – I’ll send you a PM about it all soon!

This is a good idea! Good thinking GON-HiveMind.

Hey, I remember messaging you about that article idea ages ago, Tim ^_^
As I predicted, I still haven’t started on it, hahaha. I keep thinking about it, though. I really should start on it…

Anything about technology you say? And no size limit? :D

I’ll be sure to send through my PhD thesis in a few months when done, only a few hundred thousand words :)

May I suggest checking out an interesting mod? “Brutal Doom”. Wanted more in the BFG edition? Well look no further! Installation looks intimidating though…

timmytim,

Then thats your perfect entry point – make a review of what it does, and then give a comprehensive installation guide!

I am looking forward to reading Community Soapbox if it is done with good intentions then only good can come of it.

I’m usually pretty good at finding hidden ‘account details’ or ‘change password’ pages…… this place has me stumped though!

I have a feeling I would just get banned “again” like usual. Seems most of the mods dont like my “rants” lol
