Federal Government to offer incentives to game developers

budget

According to the CEO of the Game Developers’ Association of Australia, Antony Reed, the Federal Government will soon begin offering financial incentives to game developers to develop their games in Australia. There aren’t a lot of details at this point, but it has been confirmed as definitely being A Thing.

This years budget is less than previous years, offering a total of AUD $500,000 across two programs, ‘Screen Development’ and ‘Screen Marketing’. We will keep you updated as we learn more about the incentive program.

They really need to offer tax cuts for game development, as they do currently for the tv, movie and performing arts. Classify it as something like “Interactive Arts”. That would greatly incentivise growth of the industry, just like how allot of hollywood movies are filmed here.

In light of the fact that a lot of movies have gone overseas due to the high AU dollar the TV/Film industry in Aus isnt doing so well. May as well lump the game devs into the same incentive scheme and manage it all under the “Entertainment” banner imo.

I know that looking at the examples of the various local governments in Canada, such as Montreal, would be an ideal place to start. Nothing like learning from projects that have worked fantastically well. I really want local game development to come back to Oz, so an approach that isn’t half-hearted or half-baked is essential.

Half a million dollars, that’s so generous of them (Note dripping sarcasm).

Is that really the total amount of money they’re giving to this?!

Not to mention that most of that ‘incentive’ will actually be a fixed rate loan.

Also not to produce any mature content games as they will not pass the current screening and therefore will not be sold in Australia.
