We’ve got the first gameplay footage for Total War: Rome II, showing brilliant tactician Scipio Aemilianus going off to fight for Rome’s honour at the siege of Carthage. The trailer is short, but it’s actually about half as short as it looks. You’ll see what I mean. But what is shown is all action, all the time. How far would you go for Rome?

looking good! give us moreeeeeeeeeeeee
yeah, but i really wish they would relax a bit with the brown filter… like seriously, it’s like someone spilled coffee all over the film or something.
classy is one thing, but to me at least they kinda went a little bit overboard with the filter…
none of that was gameplay, it was a bunch of scripted animations…
Well in the other 2 previous Total War, ie: Shogun and Medieval II, the soldiers and units have lots of those… ie: scripted animations.
these get played when a combat is executed or resolved between combatant especially ie: like when a knight finishes off a soldier for example he has an elaborate animation etc, same with when they parry or block etc…
normally though we don’t see a singular view of them up close, instead we see them from the high above viewpoint (where the whole mess happens simultaneously with several thousand at once) since it’s rare to have the chance to leisurely watch the fight and not busy giving an order to save your army.
So all we see here basically is those scripted animations that NORMALLY plays out during gameplay anyway except this time we see them up close (which we NEVER get the chance in practice for the most part since we would be busy giving orders to save our army).
that.. and Total War never looked so brown before.
a stark contrast to the much more vibrant color in Shogun II or even Medieval II
