Although everybody’s been enjoying a good bit of Armored Kill action on the games.on.net servers, there’s been more than a few cries for the gunship to be nerfed beyond recognition. DICE have heard your pleas, and released a server update yesterday that should take care of the issue.
Following the patch, gunships will now take even longer to move forward to a new base in Rush mode, upping the delay to 30 seconds from 15. Similarly, the delay between gunship re-spawns has been increased from 90 to 120 seconds in Rush mode, and the initial delay before a gunship spawns into a map has been vastly increased from 15 seconds to a full minute.
The patch also reduced the amount of damage the gunship takes from jet cannons, as well as stationary and mobile AA cannons, and fixes a number of bugs relating to squad leaders, the MK1A3′s flechette rounds, and Squad Rush bugs on Sharqi Peninsula. Click here for DICE’s explanation of why they’ve made the changes.

Jesuz, finally… nerf to the gunship?
it’s a BUFF…
it doesn’t matter if it spawned faster if it died SO FAST that any decent pilot can kill it in one strafe with rocket pods and guns.
it also dies so fast to SPAAG and stationary AA before.. now it at least has a chance to make one pylon turn without being shredded to bits in 5 seconds.
Lul, just realised I called it “The Battleship” in the opening paragraph. This is definitely not related to the movie featuring Rhianna and Qui-Gon Jinn.
Yeah I went jet spastic in the last week and racked up a bucketload of kills against gunships and enemy choppers, it was sooo easy to kill. I think the buff is warranted.
Whoa Tim, are you telling me it can’t do a handbrake turn by throwing out the anchor? DAMNIT MAN, stop toying with my emotions ;_;
There is a reason (if it ever gets used.) that a plane like that is generally supported by a squadron of fighters. BECAUSE ITS EASY TO SHOOT DOWN. If boats could fly, a gunship is what it would look like. The idea isn’t to make it so the gunship can survive for longer. The idea is get a decent fighter pilot to protect it. Any fighter pilot not trying to protect the gunship is an idiot, that’s where all your kills are going to come from.
Spot on, when the team I’m on has controlled the Gunship, I always default to shepherd mode. You can’t win 100% of the time, but you can certainly prolong the life of the AC-130 by a fair amount. People always slow WAY down when trying to take it down quickly, so they’re easy pickings :D
That’s true, but there’s one problem there…
Any decent pilot can kill it in ONE PASS…
that’s it.. ONE PASS, in a game where the battlespace is small enough that a plane can fly and acquire the target gunship in about 5 seconds and obliterate it in 3 seconds of burst, that gives the fighter defending the gunship a few seconds worth to spot (the hardest part) and kill the aggressor fighter (the easier part assuming both pilot equally decent) before it kills the gunship which in most cases, is NEAR impossible if the aggressor is any decent even if the defender is decent himself.
In realistic term the gunship isn’t supposed to be used in any airspace where there is hostile aircraft of course (American air superiority reign supreme after all) but in a game where they both exist (and scantly few seconds away from each other) this kind of balancing is needed to keep them relevant.
You SAW that movie?!
ANYBODY saw that movie?!
I do and don’t agree with you on that. It still takes 2 passes to kill the gunship without slowing to a crawl, and if you’re the defending pilot this can make a pretty big difference because there’s only ever 2 enemy jets in the air at once. If you just keep your head and think where they are it’s often a lot easier to manage the defence. The other thing is having AA on your side. A couple of times I’ve jumped in the AA tank and absolutely walloped the attacking jets trying to take down the gunship before they’re even halfway through their first cannon burst.
I’m yet to see the gunship go down in a single pass as long as the occupants remember they BOTH have flares, and that the AA is at least looking in their direction. Comes down to the classic BF conundrum though, having a decent team :B
No, a friend of mine did and told me about the manoeuvre, and I’m sure I saw it on some dodgy “preview the upcoming Battleship!” on TV or something. It’s terrible :B
flares?
we just rocket it ie: Hydra rocket full salvo and then gun it down while the rocket reloads (assuming you survive the pass).
the gunship is so slow and large you can’t miss with either and both together will vaporize the gunship in one back to back salvo.
Depending on how well you can lead the hydra rockets, you can do this from pretty much the moment you are airborne off the runway (the rocket and the guns have very long reach but the problem normally is hitting the target with them, which is not a problem when the target is so slow and large in the sky).
Incidentally that’s also how the rotary gunships pulverize the gunship in one pass…
one full Hydra salvo, along with 30mm cannon burst == dead AC-130 in a single attack.
I thought they would allow us to fly it.
Everything that they have added was in Desert Combat and more and they could be used entirely too.
Ships anyone?
BronzeD, I’d say you play on servers with a lot smarter players than the ones I encounter :B I use the same method to take them down, but nobody else seems smart enough to…. Guess I better not play against you, I’ll get schooled ;)
What ships are we gonna fight with in modern era though? Fast attack boats? Because we sure as hell don’t use the large gunboats to do classical naval engagement anymore…
or rather… they don’t exist anymore… (battleships are gone) it’s all either missile cruiser or destroyers, next to the submarines.
Try it, because let’s face it EVERYONE will eventually figure it out..
it’s DEAD EASY, AC-130 is DEAD Slow and moves in one singular pattern, a steady pylon turn.
All you need to know is how much to lead the Hydra, and your guns, THAT’S IT… go airborne, point in the direction of the gunship, put the correct lead and let loose as fast as you can with both…
BOOOM.. dead gunship in 5 seconds flat from the moment your wheels go off the runway.
EVERYONE who flies will eventually know how to do it as naturally as an engie RPG a tank sides and rear, so it’s to be expected that the buff for it’s health came.
Thats besides the point, its a game and there are still battleships and destroyers in this current world so why not let us use them and as i said why not let us use the gunship.
Desert combat was a mod for BF1942(which most of DICE made) and they still havent released anything like it and as i type this im starting to think it might be their trump card for BF4.
No that’s my point, THERE IS NO BATTLESHIP left in this current world outside the ones kept in mothballs.
in case you didn’t know the last Iowa Battleship for example was mothballed years ago, and there is no other country in the world left with operating battleship AT ALL.
Destroyers also don’t carry surface guns for ship to ship engagement beyond their standard 5 inch automatic cannon these days because the majority of their arsenal is missile based.
It won’t be. Look into modern naval warfare tactics and unless you want someone sitting on a boat about 20km off the shore pressing a button occasionally to launch the odd cruise missile, you’re in for a pretty boring game…
All the Iowa class battleships have been decommissioned and donated as floating memorial ships. BronzeD unfortunately has hit the nail on the head, it’d be subs and missile frigates.
If you want them to do battleship esque type engagements, I reckon it’d be a potential thing to bring up in the sequel to BF 2142. Could be something fun…
