Planetside 2 is going to be free-to-play, and according to designer Jason Good, that’s because subscription MMO’s are clearly on the way out. “As developers continue to figure out how to handle free-to-play in more effective ways, I think the traditional subscription MMO will continue to fade,” he told VG247.
“As a free-to-play game, rushing it out the door would be especially bad. There’s no box sales for us to fall back on – if it isn’t fun, we aren’t going to see any money, simple as that. Luckily for us, I think a lot of people are going to have a blast in Planetside 2.,” he said. “There’s nothing quite like it when it comes to online gaming.”

Words I love to hear. But as much as the PC elite don’t want to hear this, maybe its worth little the little consoles have their play in the F2P MMO circle. Could be interesting to see if its a PC specific interest, or if Consoles would enjoy the experience too.
Only 1 subscription based MMO has ever lived, and it’s a long way from dying.
How long do they expect F2P MMOs to last on selling visual customizations and progression short-cuts?
Surely some ‘price of entry’ is a more solid model. With options to offer appropriate content beyond that.
snazz,
Well, I’d agree that it’d ultimately create higher quality games and make producers happy, but I dunno, they have the marketing teams and it seems that F2P is the way of the future. Who are we to judge.
SHUT UP AND LET ME INTO THE BETA ALREADY
If there is worry how sustainable F2P model is, could they not just work an “initial cost but then F2P” model?
Maybe a cost per account set up. And still have the micro transactions instead of subscription.
