Rumour: Will the next Fallout game take place in Boston?

Fallout: New Vegas

Today’s next rumour is about another beloved RPG franchise. An anonymous tipster who “may or may not work for MIT” has explained how Bethesda are researching and looking into the Boston area as the setting for the next Fallout game. “The rumors are true, Fallout 4 will take place in Boston. In case you haven’t heard, Bethesda has recently been scoping out and researching Boston. They also have a strong connection to MIT,” he told Reddit.

Another user has backed up his claim saying, “I’ve been hearing reports from people in the Boston area, where my fellow Fallout-obsessed brother lives, that Bethesda has been in the Boston area doing initial research for Fallout 4. It’s highly speculative, but the main rumors surround Bethesda’s connection to “The Institute”, or what we call the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or M.I.T.”

So what we do have is highly speculative, but it does set a pretty solid foundation. What do you think of the choice of Boston?

I can’t even remember where Fallout 3 was meant to be set. Really didn’t seem that important to me.

I think it would be alot more interesting set in Europe, Russia, or China for example.

Theyve been milking the US for way too long in the franchise

Screw that, Fallout 4 – Brisvegas!
Now that would be killer.

Oh and diamondd, f3 was set in washington. It was quite a bit of the plot point…

Could be in Australia for all I care. Would be hilarious to have flesh eating kangaroos hopping about. I just hope they make the next Fallout epic. After new Vegas I was completely over the game and mechanics.

Completely agree Coatsy, I’d love to see a post-apocalyptic Europe, Germany, somewhere that was frozen at the height of the communist era.

psychofruiterer,

now I think about it there was that presidential crap going on wasn’t there… lol buthey, it was a long time ago and while that does make sense to be in Washington its not that big a deal IMO.

as for going international, maybe they could do a “whoops, turned out only america got nuked!” :P

for anyone who is more familiar with the lore, does anything contradict vault-tec being in Europe?

honestly I personally love the worlds of of Fallout 3 and NV. the pre-war futuristic universe is fucking awesome. I doubt I would enjoy another country more.

I just hope they have a new engine.

Let’s be highly unusual and play as a Ghoul! (doubtful)

diamondd,

Seriously? It was quite obviously Washington DC.

Bethesda happens to be a suburb of the city, around the area the game was set.

The last FO games have been more about showing off “iconic” places in America. Nobody gives a s**t about Boston.

It’s been a long time since i brushed up on my lore, but from memory Vault Tec was a strictly American firm. The vaults began long, long before nukes got involved in response to a virus, so i don’t think they went international.

I don’t know if a European Fallout would work anyway. The tone of the games has always been American imho. Moving to a different continent would be damaging to the general theme of the game. With that said, I’d really like a return to Fallout 1′s atmosphere. Even Fallout 2 failed to capture that magic.

+1 to the new engine though. Sick of bloody Gamebyro.

Exactly. Name one iconic landmark in Boston. I honestly can’t think of one and I consider myself a bit of a trivia buff. New York city would be a bit of a cliche but still how awesome would that be? The subway network would be a nightmarish place to explore and I distinctly remember shitting my pants everytime I had to go through the DC subways in Fallout 3. How about San Francisco? Don’t see too many games set there.

Oh, and a brand new engine please for Fallout 4. I think it’s time to move on from Gamebryo engine. What do people think of the Creation Engine (used for Skyrim)?

sathias,

one play through, 4 years, sue me

In Fallout lore, Australia is a bit of a radioactive hellhole with a lot of mutant creatures roaming the wastes, it would make a great Fallout setting.

Of course, what sells is something that is recognisable to the majority of their audience – which means another American city/area.

Eww… Boston.

That’s like a nothing area.

Vegas was cool, lots of recognizable landmarks.

Why the Boston hate? Seems like a good setting to me. I’d hate it if they did it in a place like New York or LA.

Boston hate because it’s just a generic city. No real defining landmarks or features.

Washington had the American captial, Vegas had, well… Vegas.

What does Boston have? A university, and a bunch of suburbs.

The should choose a setting that they have at least mentioned previously. For instance, ED-E was sent from, or passed through Chicago. While people might think that LA or SF are a bad idea, they are both iconic and would be logically sound ideas considering the New California Republic story arch.

Yeah lets see the fallout world in Russia, Germany, France, England etc.

Boston? I don’t even know much about it, all the fallout games I know where meant to be in real life places but they didn’t do them much justice, so I didn’t care.

I just hope Fallout 4 means more freedom and better engine. Maybe without the need of a HD pack to be made by the community on day one?

Oh god, no more subways. Please. I’m so glad that I was able to stay almost completely above ground in NV.
