Rumour: Bethesda picks up rights to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

This one’s a bit of a rumour, really. According to the same Ukrainian blogger that tipped off the media to the closure of the STALKER 2 project, Bethesda have now picked up the rights to make their own STALKER game. Apparently the brand has not been sold by GSC owner Sergei Grigorovich, but Bethesda have purchased the rights to make a game based on the IP, but do not have the rights to the extended universe. It’s all a bit complicated, which is, of course, exacerbated by the rumour mill and each retelling. It is interesting to note though that when contacted for comment, Bethesda have reportedly responded with a ‘no comment’, as opposed to just a ‘no, this is not true’. So, make of that what you will.

Better than EA getting it

It more reads to me that they’ve picked up rights to make a STALKER game, not necessarily STALKER 2, I don’t see anything inherently wrong with having multiples companies make games set in the one universe.

If it’s not on xray it’s not STALKER. Although looking at how much freedom Harvey Smith seems to gets at bethsoft it gives me some hope that if they have gotten rights to it, it may find itself in good hands.

New stalker game is better than none considering GSC could care less about their fans.

What makes you say that?

And Bethesda doing STALKER makes me nervous… I hope they stay well away from their Fallout style of play.. STALKER should be far more gritty than any of Bethesda’s titles to date.

Stalker, coming to an Xbox 360 near you.

And why not? I’d be so happy if that actually happened.

darknode,

Care factor =/= money.

STALKER is one of my all time favourite RPGs. I’m interested to see what Bethesda would do with it. STALKER has a feel that i haven’t experienced in any other game. Skyrim always felt like everything was for the player, where in Pripryat i just felt like a number…

nice. i’d like to see them keep faithful to the feel of the originals but add their own touches too it. Glad they picked it up, atleast they know how to make great open world games :D

But that’s the good bit! The Zone will continue on with or without the player’s presence and precious few games actually go down that path. A game world can only be living and breathing if you aren’t the hero… so for me Fallout and Skyrim are both empty placesas everyone just waits for me to trigger their action… Skyrim less so with random environment stuff but any time you talk to someone it just feels unnatural.

I remember people making fun of the idea of Bethesda attempting to develop Stalker 2. And I always agreed it won’t work.

I love their games but they have obviously failed to prove they can successfully create amazing games in new engines.

Unfortunately Bethesda are very good at making a certain style of RPG, but unfortunately it’s not the style that STALKER is.

So much of the feeling and atmosphere in STALKER comes from the Eastern European dev team and a Bethesda produced title will just never capture that.

I’d rather see the series end now than someone else attempt a second rate, dumbed down sequel.

hang on, fallout 3 and fallout new vegas are similar titles to stalker, they are all POST APOCALYPTIC worlds ffs, how can bethesda stuff this IP up when previous titles that bethesda have done are in the exact same genre??

STALKER isn’t post apocalyptic. No offence intended, but if you believe what you wrote you have completely missed the point of STALKER.

I don’t think there are any similarities between FO3 and STALKER besides textures. Also STALKER needs to be un-forgiving and all about the mood…I can’t see it working with Beth. reliance on gimmicks like VATS, kill cams and save the world story lines.

Im sorry bro, thats like saying Call of Duty is a similar title to Half Life 2, they are both shootem ups set in a alternate reality! how could IW/Treyarch/raven/sledgehammer stuff up the HL2 IP?

obviously apples and oranges, but they are vastly different to each other. I would like Beth to keep the xray if they are looking at STALKER 2, as the creation engine is nice, i think it would make the feel of the game similar to Metro, although the 4A engine might also make things interesting…

I think Beth would come close to capturing the atmosphere, but fail at customization and enemy AI….

But STALKER isn’t set in a post apocalyptic world… =\

The Zone in the game is based on the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine, with fictional elements added in. The rest of the world in STALKER is still very much intact.

Fuck fuck fuck

I hate bethesda i fucking hate them!! Their engine is crap. Thr most basic and most annoying thing is the move mechanics, press w and feel that jerky stop action. Move right and stop and its robotic. The shooting mechanics are god awful and the motion capture.. Is there any? Is so clunky.. I never enjoyed fo3 because of the clunky everything.

Well I agree Bethesda is horrible with movement and animation. The Xray engine so dated still is smoother than Skyrims animation and movement. Well Bethesda is improving every release I don’t think they can mimic the quality, atmosphere and mechanics of Stalker.
