Whilst definitely not comparable to the awesomeness of Shivering Isles, I thoroughly enjoyed (and am still doing so) Dawnguard. I sided with the vampires and whilst the main quest was nothing groundbreaking it was extremely interesting to learn more about how soul gems work and necromancy. The modifications I've made to the Vampire Lord power makes it much more viable as well. As the article said, Dawnguard got me back into Skyrim, more so even than when I first bought it. I've easily doubled my play time now in a fairly short amount of time and will continue playing for quite some time now. With the plethora of mods that are now available, I've made Skyrim a game that I'm much happier with than the vanilla game. It took a bit of trial and error and a couple of hundred CTDs, but its well worth it. For me Skyrim is now vastly superior to Oblivion and will keep getting better as more content is added both officially and through mods.

Dawnguard is a great excuse to get back into Skryim, but it's not worth $25.

The vampire lord mode is very underwhelming, both in gameplay mechanics and power. I wanted to become a red-eyed vampire warrior in plate armour, not some mincing half-bat creature who's limited to lobbing a few spells about to barely tickle my enemies.

The Dawnguard quest line itself is incredibly mediocre, featuring dialogue and plot twists from your average Twilight fanfiction. It even ends with the standard unique Skyrim weapon quest reward that ends up being a quarter of the damage of a fully upgraded forge weapon.

There quest chain did include one cool area to explore, but this quickly culminated in a boss fight and then it's back to Skyrim. Hardly worth the $25 price point.

In the end, the best thing about the Dawnguard DLC is that it's got me back playing Skyrim. There's a whole bunch of cool, free mods available from both Steamworks and skyrim.nexusmods.com which add everything from new dragonbone weapons, cloaks, and new RPG beginnings (my Orc bandit character is welcomed in the wilds, but attacked on sight in cities).

It's just a shame it cost me $25 to find the free stuff.

Loved Skyrim, just can't seem to get interested in this expansion though. I guess it is because it isn't anything really new - vampires and werewolves have been in the ES series before, there isn't any "new" lands to explore and the story behind it seems quite ho-hum, imo.

Then again it could be that I was just spoiled by Morrowind back in the day, loved that game and the expansions were actually that, expansions of content and not merely additions on top of old content (ie expansion vs DLC).
