Firstly, the current crop of consoles are still stuck using Direct X9 or a variation of it

Excuse me? With the rather obvious exception of the Xbox 360, I don't think the Playstation 3 or the Wii have ever used any variant of DirectX.

a PC with 16GB of RAM should not have to load every time you enter a house or even a city for that matter

I think you're exaggerating what typical gaming PCs are capable of. I could be mistaken, but I don't think 16GB is even close to the amount of RAM in a typical gaming PC. Additionally, most of the things that have to be loaded (like textures, meshes and so on) are loaded into video memory, not normal RAM. I suppose you could preload some stuff into RAM and then bring it over to VRAM when necessary (as that's faster than reading from the disk), but in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's a really bright idea.

And there we have the typical response of an ignorant PC gamer.
I hate to point out the obvious flaw in your comment but PC are older than consoles!

I have gamed on both for many years and have never understood the "mines bigger than yours" mentality of PC gamers.
Enjoy the best of both worlds, I know I do!
At the end of the day they are both just an escape from reality

We never said PC was lead platform for C2, in fact we said countless times that there is no lead platform and that we aim to deliver the same experience across all platforms. That wasn't received well, even though Crysis 2 still looks better than most other shooters out there. We are going to be doing more for PC for Crysis 3, it's already by -far- the best looking game we've built and we're not done with engine features yet :)

Developing multi-platform is no cakewalk, it goes beyond most peoples understanding, the intricacies of developing for and maintaining multiple renderers (DX9 and DX11), let alone multiple platforms. But when you're not developing an engine at the same time as the launch title, you have a lot more freedom to go apeshit with graphics because the engines strengths are established, you know where you can push it, how much you can push it and push it that little bit further while tuning it to do more at the same time.

Trouble is, the users on Metacritic are some of the most whiny ingrates I've ever seen online. I'm not inclined to trust them when some of them just mob a game they don't like for reasons not necessarily tied to gameplay. I admit they sometimes get it right, but also sometimes just have an axe to grind.

So how about the difference between rains, reins, and reigns?

Its subsequent purchase by Square Enix tightened the reigns of development and changed the name...

SAGNs aside, its the market that drives the games. Its cheaper and more efficient to make console games due to the never changing hardware. Most of us realise that you're beating the "PC is better!" drum since the website format change - to the point where the games.on.net iPhone app hasn't worked since - primarily because that's your target audience.

But we're the niche and consoles are mainstream and pining for the good old days won't help. Game makers need to improve the story and plot lines behind the games and graphics/hardware requirements be damned. Look no further than the Diablo 3 debacle - a game begging for a console if ever there was one - whose story was superficial, with far superior graphics than its predecessor - to the point where its user score on Metacritic is a pathetic 3.8/10 and three months after release has the lasting appeal of a Funcom MMOG.

consoles are probably going to go the way of being upgradable nice and easy for the average Joe.

Nah. It's more likely consoles will move towards cloud gaming (such as OnLive - well, once the tech matures anyway), or even have the "consoles" integrated into TVs. Since all the rendering is done elsewhere the need for people to buy powerful would disappear. Of course it would also mean people would lose even more control over the games they "buy", and would be at the whim and mercy of the vendors as well as the condition of the network. But that seems to be the way things are headed and I doubt most consumers are smart enough to think long-term about such things.

unfortunately he is correct about not really needing to upgrade for games as much these days, they don’t much push the envelope like they used to and its depressing to think they are just waiting for next gen consoles so they can do bad ports to pc again. I lovegood upgrade but there’s really not as much point these days, sigh.

I actually run GW2 maxed out at a smooth frame rate... on a Core 2 Duo. Am not sure what the point of fast CPUs is these days.

Loving Squenix these days. They go out of their way to please the PC crowd when they really don't have to. I will always purchase games of theirs that I find interesting from now on. I have faith in them to continue delivering excellent PC and Console titles, Deus Ex is another shining example of that.

Got to love developers like Crytech who are willing to push the boundaries just for the technical impressiveness of it. So few developers still try to do this

A lot of the reson for this is that their games are tech demo's for the engines that they make most of the money from. They could almost it write as advertising. If the games that they make arn't increadble then what hope would a 3rd party studio have of making an incredable game with the engine.

I just got about $600 worth of upgrades. I can't even remember why, other than 'My CPU is old, I want a new one.' Last year I got a reasonably priced GPU that has DX11 features but I dont think it's beastly enough to handle some of the more recent games on max settings.

I'm definitely looking forward to Crysis 3 destroying everybody's computers :P

Got to love developers like Crytech who are willing to push the boundaries just for the technical impressiveness of it. So few developers still try to do this - there's not the competition there used to be to make games that demand the most from a system. Epic are another company who have always tried to push the boundaries of technology using the Unreal engine.
But reading this article has made me think that it's actually Valve who've done more than anyone to save PC gaming by increasing convenience for the user and profitability for the developer.
