Are you waiting for news on DOOM 4? id Software head John Carmack would like to remind you that patience is a virtue. In his keynote speech at QuakeCon 2012, the exec said that they are trying to avoid some of the mistakes that they made with Rage, and that DOOM 4 “will be done when it’s done”. According to the same speech, the game will feature “better tactical gameplay” and “a gritty, visceral feel”, but there were no gameplay elements revealed beyond the promise of ‘shotguns and demons’. Well, really, isn’t that enough?

No flashlight might be a nice feature.
being able to run the 100m in less than 5 secs, 100 mobs on screen and ridiculous explosions and gore please.
While I didn’t really look into it, didn’t a lot of people think 3 was a bit of a miss? If so shouldn’t they also avoid the mistakes made there?
And Is anyone expecting much from the DOOM franchise now? Does it still have an appeal?
I think id will be trying to get back that reputation they lost with the Rage screwup, which hopefully means that they will put more effort into Doom4 than ever before!
I look forward to seeing some Doom 4 in-game tidbits…hopefully sometime in the near future!
Hope there’s no regenerating health.
Before Carmack can ever get back on his feet with actual GAME development, he needs to step away from his last choice in development “future” by moving far far away from development on a Mac. I’m not going to bother searching for the article…I know it’s there. Shortly after that “decision”, they were making games for consoles, which was a bad idea. Consoles play their role in the gaming world…I do not deny this fact. I just don’t think console and PC games “mix”. For a game to be developed for a console, it has to be written for the console because of hardware limitations, and can then be ported to PC….but not without the repercussions of control loss and bad graphics. On the other side of things, when something is developed for the PC, it’s too difficult to actually port the game to console because developers have too much liberal abilities in creativity…resources are abundant. On the far side of this comment, I talked about Carmack’s choice of development on a Mac, and that was due to development in a “stable environment”….an environment that DOES NOT MIX with other platforms, whether it be PC or console. Yes Mac lovers, I’ve used one…multiple occasions, and even in the development environment, and they are STILL writhing pieces of crap, not matter which way you throw your argument.
looking forward too it. i like that he said it have a “a gritty, visceral feel”, mix that with the old school doom gameplay and you can’t go wrong. I know i’m not a lone in enjoying old school shooters that are a challenge, without being interrupted with cut scenes every 5 minutes lol. All we need to know is there are demons, and you are the only hope in saving everyone! lol woo
Recommendation: make Doom 2 but with amazing next gen graphics. Keep the monsters, weapons, soundtrack, etc. It’s basically free money.
Then do the exact same thing with Quake I and III.
No black texturing to fake shadows would be nice. Something that isn’t the Doom 3 engine really.
I’m glad someone likes the words gritty and visceral – seems they get thrown around in at least 50% of movie and game descriptions these days…
Cannot wait for this game. Doom 3 is one of the most atmospheric FPS games I’ve ever played, just keep away from all that invulnerability and slow mo reliant gameplay that was in the expansion and be sure to bring back the soul cube.
Loads of secrets to find again too pls. Hopefully they tone down on the ammo a lot this time though so that finding the secret rooms packed with ammo actually come in useful this time.
There was so much ammo in doom 3 I could pretty much run the entire game with just the shotgun and never run out, let alone with the introduction of the gravity gun in the expansion (if they do use this again – which would be good because it was fun playing catch – it needs to use some sort of ammo).
No flashlight either, even if it leaves me in pitch black with nothing to see except for their glowing red eyes.
Agree that Doom4 should be just Doom2 with an new engine. I want a marine that run 100mph, no reloading of guns, heaps of bad guys on the screen at once, a stupidly over powered shot gun, a rockin’ ass sound track and a back story that can fit on the back of a fag packet. Oh and keep Tim Wilts away from the story line – in fact keep him away from the whole thing. While I’m at it, hire Romero on contract to make some maps.
You just want him so he can make you his bitch…
You seen that amazing hair of his? It’s enough to make anybody want to be his bitch. Who needs Daikatana? :P
Doom 4 will be good if there is no story line, no flashlights and lots and lots of demons :P
Uh… Carmack is not id’s boss, nor is he an exec. He’s a programmer.
ianhead,
yeah… his the co-founder of the company mate
as well as lead programmer
