Guild Wars 2 has officially launched overnight following a three-day head start by pre-purchasers, pre-orderers and other various VIP’s. To celebrate, ArenaNet have found their own horn and tooted it wildly, perhaps with good reason as the number of pre-orders for the game has hit a staggering one million.
ArenaNet also revealed that 400,000 people were logged in concurrently over the early access weekend, which may account for some of the mostly-resolved connectivity issues that many players were reporting. “This is the culmination of a five-year journey and to be greeted by this level of enthusiasm by our fans is truly amazing,” enthused ArenaNet’s Mike O’Brien.
Stay tuned later today for the first instalment of our Guild Wars 2 coverage.

Bought it last night, game is much better looking running than in screenshots, but the cinematics are annoying, would rather not have them if they’re going to chose what I say at first.
The idea that you can use any weapon is much more limited that I first thought, I was under the impression that a Mesmer using a great sword would be hitting things, but it seems most (not all!) melee weapons for casters are just stat sticks with different skills.
Still, pretty interested to see more content and try the PVP.
Fun game so far. Being scaled up to 80 for WvW works well, you are a bit gimp but its fine to join the chaos. It will be interesting to see if the level of polish in the starting areas is representative of the whole game or if it gets scruffy the higher you get.
Too bad its been 5 days now and they still don’t have a functioning auction.
it was working at the start.. then it went down quickly when it was flooded in
now it’s been down for maintenance for a few days.
Incidentally, you could always SKIP the cinematics you know…
the button is right down there during the cinematics.
I like the cinematics it breaks things up a bit. Choosing what you say is often meaningless to outcomes see SWTOR.
But the option is there to skip them for those who want to rush it.
So for someone who hasn’t bought the game yet, if I go buy the retail box how much more is there to download? I hear to download it, your looking at over 14GB of the GON mirror?
cheers
the game is pretty damned awesome. can see myself getting a lot of play out of this, and i havnt touched an MMORPG since the end of wrath of the lich king.
from what ive found, theve quite critically investigated the way MMORPG’s work.
typically it goes like this:
Question is the basis for prompting exploration and progress
whereas guild wars 2:
exploration and progress is what prompts question.
There is of course still grind, but this way, it’s much less noticable.
Unsure about retail box, that contains an install disc, so a fair percentage of that 14+GB would be installed, so be much less to download from the GW2 content server (ie, just updates since the disc was pressed).
However, if you’re a ‘node customer, downloading from GON mirror would be quota free, so could grab the lot without touching your monthly quota, so might be the better option regardless.
cyrinno,
I’ve seen Swtor through every class quest and they are certainly not meaningless. Just seems like some story would tie it together but it kinda turns into “yadda yadda furry orcs and leafy elves”
