Given its cult-like popularity, this was bound to happen eventually: the exceedingly popular Day Z mod for ArmA II is now going to be developed as a standalone game. As the announcement says, you probably have a lot of questions, but unfortunately, we don’t have the answers right now. Bohemia just wanted to get the announcement out now, and the reams and reams of answers will come later.
What we do know, though, is that the new game will have a Minecraft-esque dev model, “fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price”. The game has a new website that you should probably keep an eye on if you’re interested in the previously-mentioned answers.

It better be free for those of us that bought Arma 2 strictly for it. There’s going to be real bad blood between them and the players if the mod just gets dropped and you’re expected to buy DayZ again.
More frequent updates will be good however, so much needs to be done and there’s so much potential for new features to exist.
I considered getting ARMA for DayZ, then I remembered how god awful the engine is.
Here’s hoping the standalone uses a different engine. (not likely)
*polishes pitchfork* They better be careful about the action they take…
The mod won’t be dropped, I believe rocket was planning on using it as a test-bed for experimental features before they go into the standalone.
“Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so.”
I’d pay for a standalone, but I would expect it to feel like a standalone, rather than a mod in its alpha stage. I don’t think that buying ARMA II gives anyone the right to have a free copy of the standalone, even if they bought it for dayz and dayz alone.
I bought arma2 exclusively for dayz and I have no problem paying for a standalone
Maybe not a right but they’d be smart not to quick that hornets nest. Bohemia know just as much as we that their huge sales bump recently is solely because of DayZ (ie: very few people will actually play Arma2 itself). They’re now making a standalone version of the game which means everyone who bought Arma 2 to NOT play Arma 2 may have to drop even more money to keep playing what they actually wanted to play (DayZ), people are going to be pissed if that’s the case regardless of whether it’s right or not.
I mean i’d see it as perhaps ‘fair enough’ if it wasn’t Bohemia making the standalone version but they are.
But they are putting development time in to a new game now, using their own staff (who are working on ArmA III) to make this game. You can’t expect them to do it for no money in return.
By the sound of the development model they are using, the alpha price should be nice and low, and guarantee you all future versions of the game.
I just bought arma 2….baah!. lol
*facepalm*
Why wouldn’t you want to buy the stand alone, currently what do the Day Z developers actually get out of people buying ArmA 2?
With support would mean a better mod and a better supported mod.
I’m pretty sure Day-Z was originally just a test some guy made to see what could be done with the engine, it’s not his fault people were too stupid to realise how awesome Arma is and buy it solely for Day-Z….
I’ll buy the Stand-Alone game, As I know this buggy pile of poop one we have now is just a tech demo / something nobody expected to get so popular.
Stand-Alone would have way way better functionality than it just being a mod.
Also, Face palm at not many people would play Arma 2 alone…. The mod site downloads have gone through the roof, The servers are always more populated etc etc… Day-Z was the reason why a lot brought Arma, Until they realised it was a brilliant game with endless hours of mission mods and misc modifications.
Except they’ve already gotten that money from people buying Arma 2 just to play DayZ. I’m not suggesting they release it to everyone for free but preferably those who bought Arma2 to play DayZ wouldn’t have to buy it again, or at the VERY least get a very heavy discount off of it.
And to clarify if they’re just asking for something like $5 then cool, i’d pay that, maybe even $10, but $20 plus? P!ss off, that’s more than what I paid for Arma 2.
You didn’t buy DayZ. You bought Arma 2 and you got DayZ for free.
Even if you think of it in terms of buying DayZ, well that means you got Arma 2 for free.
A lot of people might be shocked to discover that Arma 2 is an entire game and one well worth 30$ at that.
If I was in charge of Bohemia Interactive I would take that hornets nest and drop kick it into those angry mobs who ‘bought DayZ’.
Fair enough, and I agree with what you say that you are actually buying Arma 2 but that’s not what all the people who bought it were thinking and it’s not exactly their fault given the sheer hype that’s taken over the internet over the game and the many articles around the place telling people to buy Arma 2 so they can play DayZ including GON.
Also whether or not Arma 2 is a good game is irrelevant to the conversation, people bought Arma 2 for DayZ and otherwise would not have given Arma 2 the light of day, this is pretty much free money to Bohemia.
At some stage the mod will likely be abandoned in favour of full focus on the standalone game, however there are already other spin-off mods popping up (e.g. Lingor Island) which don’t use the official HIVE server.
Think of how much time you’ve put into DayZ… for $17 on the Arma2 sale… how much time did you put into the last $80 AAA title? A whole lot less.
I’m happy to throw money at the screen hoping a bug free DayZ oozes out.
I’m a little concerned that they’re going for the cheap buy in at Alpha model… it means the game will perpetually be in the weird quasi-Alpha it is now. I’d prefer they abandon the mod right now and devote everything to producing a quality release… but I’m sure whatever comes out of this will be the best of this new genre that has been created.
I remember playing a zombie mod for Arma 1. It’s not like its even that new a concept, was just new to this specific engine.
I personally prefered the Arma 1 mod, where it was all coop and everyone had to band together, and the backstabbing element wasnt there.
This separation of DayZ players from the normal Arma 2 community is needed, if you are a DayZ player and don’t know what I mean I will just say this. The mod hasn’t exactly attracted well behaved players to the game (You would especially notice this if you use the AusArma Teamspeak server). In other words I’m trying to delicately put that it has attracted the scum that regular Arma 2 players play Arma to avoid.
Also if DayZ becomes a standalone game (on Armas engine) they can modify and disable a lot of core functions built into the game that cant be disabled via a mod (such as disabling the script editing during a mission which is used in normal arma to adapt missions on the fly). That would instantly cut the hackers down a lot.
This is good to see, but bound to happen. They made a fortune out of it via Arma 2 and now they can make a bit extra.
I’m sure it’ll be a better title because of this. It’s like comparing a UDK based game and one that is actually developed with Unreal Engine.
I brought Operation Arrowhead yesterday so that I could play DayZ. LoL.
