Day Z creator taking hacking seriously in standalone game

Day Z

While zombie shooter fans wait with bated breath for the Day Z standalone game, creator Dean “Rocket” Hall has sat down with PC Gamer to have a chat about what it means for the game to stand on its own two(?) legs.

One of the important issues, he said, is taking on hacking. “It’s something that you never completely solve, you just have to keep on at it,” he told PC Gamer. “I don’t like to say that we’ll lock it down, but we’ll get the experience polished for PvP. We’ll be able to start dealing with the hacking issues properly, and also lock down some of the key bugs. If we wanted to fix these right now, we’d have to mess with Arma too much. I think Arma deserves to be left alone to an extent, and not have Day Z putting in fixes that might cause it problems.”

I love how the excuse for everything is always “we’d have to mess with Arma too much”, I can’t think of a single mod off the top of my head that didn’t implement a feature they wanted because of that reason… in fact that’s the whole point of mods… TO MESS WITH THE ORIGINAL GAME.

The issue is more that DayZ isn’t really a mod, it’s just a mission pack with a convoluted save system.

That’s the excuse for everything?…always? Any other examples?

Rocket is a Dev at Bohemia Interactive, not your typical third party modder. When he talks about messing with ArmA he’s talking about changing the core game not his mod. Third party mods don’t usually touch the source code of the engine they’re on, which is often hard-coded.
