Dark Souls already modded to fix in-game resolution issues, Green Man speaks out

Dark Souls

PC gamers rejoice – it seems that an enthusiastic modder has already created a workaround to fix the internal resolution issues which were limiting Dark Souls to 720p regardless of your monitor. A NeoGAF forum member by the name of Durante has posted this explanation showing some before and after screenshots, which links to this site as a place to download it from.

There are a few known issues including bad framerates with AMD cards, but presumably these will be ironed out soon. Meanwhile, Green Man Gaming have issued a statement on their recent refusal to sell the game to Australians, claiming that they “haven’t been able to reach an agreement regarding the specifics of this product”, and “as such we can’t currently sell Dark Souls in Australia and New Zealand”.

When games.on.net asked them why Dark Souls was sold to us prior to having an agreement in place, their community manager responded with “It shouldn’t have been. But anyone who bought it during that time will still receive their copy.”

Wow what a difference just changing the resolution makes. O_O

4 hours.

It took him 4 hours to fix it.

There are also some text bugs, but he’s going to have a crack at it tomorrow and then hopefully update the fix.

now all you losers can buy it and quit complaining.

Ninja Catfish

Hooray! I’m downloading my copy on Steam now.

What about the aussie gamers that have already prr-ordered it from GMG?

jambo,

Only 4 hours for a non-dev to have a go at it? From Software is a bloody joke. Such a long wait for a rubbish console port. I could care less about graphical enhancements but locking the game to 720p and 30 frames per second is just outright insulting….

Can say that again, that is an insane difference! Funny that a user fixed it in so little time..

and i got my key from Greenman this morning, will download it when i get home. However, GW2 tomorrow so…

revengous,

Troll, but I’ll bite. This most certainly hasn’t changed my mind at all. In fact I’m even less impressed with the developers, as essentially ‘some random’ has already fixed something that they either weren’t able to do, or were too lazy to do after only 4 hours. Again, I’d rather they didn’t bother than half-arse it and discourage other developers when they spout crap about us pirating everything after it has rubbish sales because we’re mostly an intelligent user-base that doesn’t just buy crap.

If a random end user can fix the resolution problems then what was stopping the devs from doing so?

Also, I’m expecting to see a lot more of these “negotiations” affecting sales of games to Aussies through Green Man Gaming. They seem to have become a victim of their own success among Aussies.

Not available yet in Australia apparently, so nope!

Good on GMG for refusing to price jack.

Yep not available. How ever are you going to get it cheaper than Australia?

Price is similar(ish) on ebay also if you are keen to import for a retail copy :)

How long does it take you to get on your high horse every morning? Jesus. If you’re willing to skip one of the best games ever made due to stubbornness then by all means. I’ll be over having a friggin ball with demons and stuff.

gotoadgo,

Its usually the first thing I do when I get up. Its an important part of a healthy breakfast. Enjoy. I’ll be playing CS:GO.

Apparently using the resolution patch prevents you from seeing the messages left on the ground by other players. I have a feeling that’d also apply to player summon messages….pretty huge thing to be missing. Yes you can play the game offline, but as a big fan of both DS games on PS3, those IMO are some of the best reasons TO play this game. The feeling of other people being there in what is often a dark depressing environment is key.

Give it time, I’m sure the issues being experienced to date will be fixed. It only took a short amount of time to get this far, and by looking at that thread it sounds like the guy has a few ideas already on how to fix the few issues left.

It’s rather easy to google “dark souls steam key”, punch in credit card details, and be downloading the game within a few hours. Boss level tip.

Right you are, just checked my email and I have it :-)

Anyone in Australia and New Zealand that wants to purchase the game on Green Man Gaming still can with the following steps (I just did and it worked fine):

1. Go to green man gaming through a proxy services like this
http://proxy4.proxybeud.info/browse.php?u=Oi8vd3d3LmdyZWVubWFuZ2FtaW5nLmNvbS9zL3VzL2VuL3BjL2dhbWVzL2FjdGlvbi9kYXJrLXNvdWxzLXByZXBhcmUtZGllLWVkaXRpb24tbmEv&b=13

2. Add the game to your cart and procede to the checkout.

3. Login/Create a user account with Green Man Gaming.

4. You can now go to the site without the proxy link (more secure) and continue to pay for the game.

5. You now have Dark Souls for $30 less.

Hope this helps some people :D

A few versions later…apparently in-game text and button prompts work properly now and there’s fully adjustable anistropic filtering.

This game is beyond awful.

Oh? What don’t you like? Please expand this opinion, I’m curious.

Don’t get me wrong, if people are enjoying it all more power to them, I’m the one missing out. However having never played it before, I don’t have any pre-conceptions about how “awesome” it is.

Maybe I just can’t get past the fact of how terrible a port it is. The controls are clunky as hell, you get asked to press the “A” button and have to guess what button it is, the frame rate is terrible, the graphics are pretty bad even with the resolution fix, it just feels very dated to me.

Maybe I haven’t given it enough of a go, but my initial impressions are not good at all.

sathias,

Mmmm I have heard that you really want to be using a controller for this.

Accidentally paused the download, so I’m still waiting…

I might have to give that a go then, I have a spare 360 controller somewhere.

Pretty happy about finally getting a refund from GMG.
