Black Mesa: Source gameplay leaked, world dies of shock

An anonymous source has leaked three-and-a-half glorious minutes of footage from the long-awaited Black Mesa: Source mod to ValveTime, collectors of all things Valve. The footage comes from the “On a Rail” chapter, but ValveTime are not able to comment on how recent the footage is. Still, interesting stuff.

Wicked! It’s great to see that this mod is still alive and kicking :D

Looks surprisingly dated… Also really? (ALL UPPER CASE)?

Jambo specifically requested in his tip that his name be written with a lower-case ‘J’, you see. It’s sort of a joke ;)

I keel you!!! >=[

Worst voice acting ever! XD

Very impressive. I wonder if ironsights is just for the revolver or for all weapons. Was a bit ‘eh’ about the head bobs when strafing though, and the music was too loud lol.

Iron sights is for the revolver only, like in HL1 multiplayer.

Never played HL1 MP so that’s why I never knew about the revolver having ironsights lol.

Yes, the voice acting is also my primary criticism but as I said on IRC, it’s hardly surprising. I’ve seen a lot of AAA titles with mediocre voice acting, which I think as a lot to do with a lack of direction, among other things.

I get the feeling studios often just give a script to an actor an go, “you’re a space marine fighting aliens; say these lines into the microphone”. When you see games with good voice acting (like most of Valve’s Source titles), it’s because part of the creative team sits there in the studio, working with the actor throughout the whole session. It irks me that so many studios do not get this. Without direction, you’re just saying lines with no context; taking a stab in the dark.

Of course, it’s hard for a mod team like Black Mesa to achieve something like this because their team members are scattered across the globe.

Would have been great about 5 years ago! Not to discount all their hard efforts but it’s possibly too little too late to be successful… still, shorter than Valve’s development cycle!

Source is very dated with its animation / tech and low res textures. agreed with schikitar game would have been ok for 2007..

If only it was on Source 2 with 10k textures.

I think it looks good. Not amazing or up to par with some new games. But I’ll still play it. You guys will too I’m sure. It’s a mod not a retail game.

Play it and appreciate their efforts. I know I will be.

Have you played Portal 2? Gorgeous game!

+1

style wins every time

realone,

Source’s animtion system is not out of date (and in fact, I think the facial animation is still virtually unparalleled).

I have no idea what you mean by 10k textures. Surely not 10,000 x 10,000? No engine that I know of uses textures so absurdly large.

Or do you mean 1024×1024 textures? Source has supported and used those for many years.

jambo,

I’ve played portal and portal 2 which yes they are funs games but not gorgeous in graphics.

nacimota,

Rage has 16k textures support

do you mean 16k such as 4096×4096? If so thats nothing new…

It looks good graphically, especially when compared to the original.

Good to see the mod is still alive. I hope the makers are still enjoying the process. After so long I can imagine being slightly exhausted.
Got to respect their devotion.

Still looks good tbh considering how old the engine is. Source is the only engine that has stood the test of time. IMO. Looks good runs amazingly, easy to mod.

What i’m really interested in is valves cloth simulation addition to source for dota 2. Cloth simulation would be such a huge step in graphics.

nacimota,

Rage has 16k textures support

Rage (or more specifically, id Tech 5) does not apply its textures in the same way that source does. id Tech 5′s Virtual Texturing system in Rage actually supports textures up to 128000×128000, but these are used to cover large areas and are basically streamed from the disk (you cannot store textures that large on the card).

Over the small areas that textures are typically applied to in Source (or Unreal, as another example), anything over 2048^2 is usually pretty excessive in my opinion. But source supports textures up to 4096^2 because that is the limit imposed by DirectX 9.0c. DirectX 11.1 and very recent graphics cards support 16384^2 textures, but once again, in the context they are used in Source, you would not notice a difference, visually speaking (you’d chew up way more vram though).

It looks pretty cool despite that awful voice acting dialogue moment. But hey it’s a free game so I’m not complaining.

I like to see developers start doing better animation for body movements and (as stated before) cloth movement. L.A. Noire really upped the ante on facial animations but to really capture the entire subtleties of human movement would be awesome.

Actually I think I remember that particular dialog from the original Half-Life. Wasn’t that cringeworthy compared to the original…considering you’re not really talking pro voice actors or anything.

Looking good. Hope that means it’s not too far away. (it’s been quite a while already)

:( it has been taken does already
