Valve continue to build up steam (sorry) as they head towards some sort of full-blown Linux reveal, with news coming in over the weekend that the company has hired yet another Linux wizard: Sam Lantinga. Sam, according to Phoronix.com, is “one of the original Loki Software developers where he worked on porting games to Linux like Rune, Tribes 2, Railroad Tycoon II, and many others in the late 90′s.” Sam also created the popular Simple MediaDirect Layer multimedia library, and is generally considered one of the top people in Linux gaming. And now, he works for Valve. Interesting times ahead.

yay
SOON.
I still don’t know understand exactly what Linux is, nor how to pronounce it…. All I know is it’s an operating system that’s not used mainstream and is free, and seems to be hard as fuck to use ?????
Why support that ? Make them use windows or they don’t get to game lol
Huzzah. Although I’m unfortunately bound to windows by more than just games. Still, a great step forward.
It’s essentially an OS you can 100% customise yourself, write your own coding etc. some heavy programmers/gamers love it plus Mac isn’t exactly a “gaming” OS, but they catered to it, so why not Linux?
Aye if it can be ported to Mac then bring it to Linux.
If you know what a Mac is, these days it’s just linux with a pretty skin on, and costs a shedload.
linux is free, if you have the time to unlearn habits of other OS’s.
..anyway..
Go Valve!
FWIW, you’re posting on a site using Linux:
http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=games.on.net
Plus I didn’t know Android phones were hard as fuck to use. But it seems you’re not the thinking type anyway.
Anyways, even though I have no intention of using Steam I think it will be beneficial for a client to appear on Linux, even if it doesn’t end up doing much in terms of convincing other developers to port their games to Linux (the OS X Steam client hasn’t exactly resulted in a deluge of OS X games for example). I think the benefits will be more in a greater pressure to iron out the deficiencies in consumer distros, improve the quality of graphics drivers and so on.
Valve is just too cool for school.
There has been an increase though of games on OSX with the new steam client even it it hasn’t been a flood.
When you’ve got no games to choose from even a small increase is a godsend :P
Here is to a bright future ahead…
means less rebooting just to play a game for 20 – 30 minutes during work hours :)
OK, it’s now as official as you can get:

I give up this anti-DRM crusade. No-one will listen anyway. Might as well accept we don’t have control over our games anymore.
/reinstalls Steam
Hard to use? What distro are you trying to use if you are struggling, Gentoo?
Ubuntu is friendly, and it has a huge community to back it up. Also the Ubuntu software centre thing has a bunch of games for purchase, I think I saw Bastion in there the other day!
Cannot wait.
I hate MacOS because its just a wanker on top of Linux and when Steam first went to MacOS I was wondering why no Linux as it’s the same without wanker on top.
Linux has it’s issues of having so many different variations. But its a good OS and doesn’t dump it self down like MacOS and Windows as it does release after release (I thought it was bad but then Windows 8!?).
OS X is built upon BSD (broadly speaking), not Linux. Even though they’re both UNIX-like systems it doesn’t necessarily mean that an OS X application will be easily portable to Linux. Gets a bit more complicated with the various layers of the operating systems, which aren’t the same.
As for the wanker bit, it’s the fanboys who ruin things in my experience. Take away the iCult and OS X is quite decent. But it’s not one I’d normally use.
it’s OK, but its getting worse with every update. My main issue isn’t the iCult but the fact that I have to play in an Apple-shaped box.
OSX is easy to install on PC (I hate using the term “PC” in that context, but hey). Do some googling if you’re interested.
I definitely prefer my Mac running OS X for general computer use over my gaming machine which obviously runs Windows.
Firstly, if you’re not even sure what linux is, what business do you have suggesting that people not be allowed to use it for gaming? Second, there have to be benefits for the gang at Valve to do this, or else they wouldn’t be making the moves they’re making. I for one can’t wait to see what happens. While happily using Linux. (ubuntu 12.04, actually).
redshirt,
not wearing a matching hat then?
