Ubi’s Always-On DRM system fails due to demand

Ubisoft Logo

Ubisoft’s always-on DRM system Uplay was overloaded last night thanks to the Steam sales, causing countless users to be unable to log in to their newly purchased single-player games. Over at the Ubi forums there are a full 26 pages of unhappy customers before a rep finally steps up to issue a rather bland apology, which seems to get the crowd more riled up than calmed. The system is up and running again now apparently, but that doesn’t bring back the last of the Sunday play hours to the angry 9-to-5′ers, unfortunately.

There should be fines for any company that has an always on DRM system and then doesn’t put enough resources to cover it.

cyrinno,

And who would police that? Fines from police go towards extra resources for them, where would the money from the fines go?
It wouldn’t work to enforce it.

When will these companies finally get it that these type of DRM systems only inconvenience legitimate customers and never actual pirates??

They have every right to be all angry, im all riled up from just hearing about it.

Welcome to Failtown. Population: Ubisoft

When you stop buying games from them.

spkypwnsuall,

I see no reason why the ACCC wouldn’t be able to enforce such rules, it seems to me that Ubisoft’s insistence of saddling singleplayer games with unnecessary always-online DRM should be legislated against anyway.

Did Ubisoft release a statement to the media about this? That seems very unlike them. I am still awaiting a reply to my trouble ticket that I logged yesterday.

It’s good to see that they are not accountable to your customers. They have yet to provided a clear reason as the the cause of the issue. People suggesting the cause on the forums might be close to the mark but who knows only Ubisoft.

In total, No Support for over 12 hours, and no communication, no idea, and the thing that people want the most – no games to play that need Uplay.

Ow what a weekend fingers crossed this doesn’t happen when I get AC3 o PC. I need to see that story out its to good to miss.

I haven’t bought a Ubisoft game in a long time, I got their entire PC catalog for free about a year ago when their website was throwing a fit, then they sent me an email saying due to their error I can keep them all. (Well over a grands worth including DLC!)
If anything, we need more incidents of DRM failing, then we might get some action as more people are affected and hopefully have it put to an end.

lordapophis,

It shouldn’t take a DRM failure for people to realize that investing in DRM-ed content is a bad idea. It should be clear as mud – buying ANY software which have be revoked at will by the vendor is a fucking disaster waiting to happen. Steam is bad enough since access to your games is entirely in Valve’s hands and if, through no fault of your own, something dodgy happens (ranging from a PayPal dispute, to Valve’s database being compromised, to Valve closing down or any number of reasons), you might be out of a legitimate way to play your games short of using cracks. Whereas if you had a DRM-free version of the game, you’d have control over your software and no-one can take that away from you.

At least we have stores like GOG which sell non-DRM games.

Haha, i remember that. I got all the assassins creed games then too. Their website went into meltdown with all games in the store for free. Wasn’t quick enough to get as much as i wanted though.

Can’t see it happening in most countries, but didn’t the South Koreans just take Blizzard to task for not providing enough reasources for Diablo 3…it can be done.

LOL apparently my D3 account got hacked the other day, stupid thing is Battlenet has locked my account from logging in. The Account recovery options require you to verify data (which doesn’t verify even when correct for some reason). Then the support page won’t allow you to setup a ticket without logging in…

SO I call the number for Australia (on the official website0 to get this response “Sorry the number you have dialled is not in service…”

I mean WTF!!! Ubisoft is better, at least they answer calls/respond to tickets within the current decade…

Problem is that’s not really a positive…

Our governmental and independent departments like the ACCC are pretty much useless when it comes to anything like this. I am still waiting back a response from the classification board and ACCC about (separate) inquiries; and I have been waiting for a while.

If it is not a simply thing like price fixing or a dodgy commercial they do not seem as willing to respond without adequate pressure to do so…
