You know this never really came to mind, until I read this article. And your bloody right! Giant scary bosses was once a major selling point for me. Doom had creatures that stomped around the map slaughtering all demons and zombies just to make its way to the player, blasting missiles everywhere. There were also giant brain robot spiders with mini-guns for Christ sake. It was amazing.

Quake had Whitey and Duke Nukem 3D had various unique bosses. Each were a terrifying experience that did not need much extended scripting. Big giant bosses in Dead Space are practically quick time events with an interactive character, Doom3 went half way there but the Hell Knight never truly terrified the player with scary stomps and roars from a far distance. Also wasn't much of a challenge, honestly.

I miss classic big bosses.

If we're sticking strictly to FPS, Resistance 2 on PS3 had some pretty epic boss battles. It was a pity that it didn't have co-op through the campaign.

But yeah, shooters in general don't have that many epic boss battles these days. Resistance 3 had the odd one but they weren't to the caliber of Resistance 2. Killzone 3's 'boss' battles were on rail shooters more or less.

I sure hope Borderlands 2 continues with the bosses for key quests. Uber bosses are are dying breed.

Yeah my favorite boss fights have all been in MGS.
Sniper battle with The End was simply awesome. It makes you want to drag it out and have a proper slow-paced sniper battle.
And yeah steve you said it: the end of MGS4: simply epic. I thought the Metal Gear REX vs RAY battle was going to be the end as it was so awesome.
The different stages of the boss fight there and the final massive PUNCH that ended it, incredible.
Plus, no regenerating health, so that feeling Toby was speaking of was there the whole time.

very true, haven't been any real good boss fights in FPS lately. They all been pretty lame, i still remember the first time i shot up hitler in wolf 3d lol and the cyberdemon in doom, god that was epic!

The metal gear solid games have had some of the best boss bottles lately! Especially the final one in MGS 4, so good!

Ah i was going to mention the boss battle at the end of Space Marine too - ruined by being a crappy quicktime event. The one was the orc dropship and the ork warboss was pretty cool though.

Ahh Now this is what i was expecting at the end of ME3, especially after the endings for ME2 and ME1, but no, then did less than what Bioshock did (And yes, Bioshock was a great game, but the ending boss battle was just plain stupid.)

God they could have just thrown in an AWESOME fight for ME3, but nooo, just lame lama's for Master n Commander Shepard...

Im struggling to remember the 'best' boss battle, some goodies come to mind like the epic slugfest at the end of MGS4, but for an FPS.... woah

Transformers War for Cybertron had some decent old-school boss battles. Fights versus Omega Supreme, Tripticon, Soundwave and ….oh man I’ve forgotten the other guys name.. Anyway – they were definitely big badass oldschool battles! I’m hoping next month’s Fall of Cybertron has similar, but without the co-op, they wont be as memorable.
