Rumour: Images of new model PS3 surface

A slimmer PS3 has long been rumoured to be in the works, especially since Sony a filing to the U.S. Federal Communication Commission mentioned a new PS3-4000 model. Now images of that model have purportedly been leaked, showing an even slimmer PS3 than the current slim model, available in the usual spectrum of storage sizes. Sony is expected to announce the model at gamescom next month.

Looks ugly.

what purpose does this serve

Maybe instead wasting time slimming their consoles down, they could invest money in more reliable blu ray drives, the amount of which fail seems to be at the same epidemic level as the RROD for the 360.

maybe ill buy it…..again, if its cheaper.

I like the cd tray way like the ps1, hopefully it will be cooler in inside this model. Unlike my last one which just melted.

That is quite bizarre considering Sony invented Bluray drives I spose that they cheap out on components and hope to get away with it.

Instead of slimming it down, how about you focus on:

- adding wireless-N
- letting it play common media formats (especially FLAC, but lots of other stuff too)
- fixing the blu ray drive, as suggested above
- adding a $1 IR receiver so that it works with common universal remotes

Then you would have a fantastic media centre device with a blu ray player at a decent price.

Maybe the lack of some of these things is intended so that people buy a dedicated bluray player as well as a PS3.

$15 Million buck hit to the bottom line if they sell 15 million of the new model. For a feature that’s not a deal breaker for most people wanting a PS3. …And they don’t get to up-sell with the bluetooth remote or later on either.

I agree it’d be nice to have the features you mentioned but. I use it as a media player more than anything. :)

Yeah, but subtract out all the revenue from people who buy something other than a PS3 because it lacks this basic feature and I suggest you end up behind…

You do realize that the PS3 has supported HDMI-CEC from launch don’t you? You control it with you HD TV’s remote. If your remote doesn’t have a ‘Play’ and ‘Pause’ button, the ‘Select’ button usually performs both functions.

To boldly go where no video games console has gone before (3rd frame)

Bring back backwards compatibility with PS2 titles.

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3_sale_e.html … well, that was surprising!

STOP BUYING HALF A DECADE OLD CONSOLES FFS. No wonder Sony/MS aren’t bothering to release 8th gen yet.

palzer0,

Buy a ps2 and enjoy

Actual video of me trying this on my TV just now:

Shame I need to buy an IR receiver for it just to use this: http://www.firebox.com/product/5356/Doctor-Who-Sonic-Screwdriver-Universal-Remote-Control?aff=1890&gclid=CK3Ev6iAnbECFUWHpAodoDWhjQ

I’m still questioning when are they going to patch the ps3 to allow us to use PS2 discs. We can DL them off the store, use virtual mem cards, so why torture us any further Sony? ;__;

I don’t mind the already slim PS3. But this thing is ugly. It is also not needed.

Love the ugly comments, OFC it looks ugly when the pictures were taken by a pen camera.
