Just spent the $10 to get into the beta last night. I really like the fact the town is a gathering place, and that there's a message board for looking for groups :)

It's obviously not got the polish of Diablo 3, some aspects of the interface - mainly the map - need sprucing up. But it's a nice looking game with a solid foundation, well worth the spend just to get into the beta, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

I dunno, if your making a comparisons to D3 the differences are really not that significant. Don’t get me wrong because I have my own gripes about D3 but this articles seems more about putting D3 down. I could disect in more detail but I CBF with this new comments system.

That Silver Pack looks nice, $100USD is far too much though..
</blockquote>
(its also $15 more for shipping >_> ) but I still got it. I essentially know that I will be spending money on this game so buying a supporter pack was quite an easy decision for me. I would honestly get a Diamond pack if I had the money to blow but $1000 for me is too much. But it isn't for a couple of players who are double Diamond supporters (and I think one player is triple... O.o ).

The developers have stated many times that the only things in the store will be things like new animations and look customisations.

Going back on their word when it's been made so public would be disastrous for them. :)

I fully agree that there's a place for single player games. My main contention is against the opinion that seems to be out there that *every* action-RPG *needs* to be single player.

In my opinion, if a game is honest about being multiplayer, and has multiplayer features, there's nothing wrong with being always-online, and is not a point against it. Making a single player and an online game is very different, and sometimes the two just don't mix.

Path of Exile in particular wouldn't work as a single player game, since its business model depends on being always online. And without that business model, we wouldn't be able to play it. The funding the developers have is linked to this model.

<strong><a href="#comment-2235" rel="nofollow">Patrick Vuleta</a></strong>:
TBH, playing it offline would take away a great deal of the experience.

Playing Path of Exile single player would like playing Battlefield with bots. Could do it, but would be missing out on the entire point of the game. There are certainly single player FPS games though. ;)
</blockquote>

I was thinking of putting this on my laptop for a bit of gaming during overnight stays on work trips when I don't always have internet. Diablo 3 failed there already.

Global Chat setting on D3 is now set to remembering the previous status when you last played... I have mine off for all those reasons mentioned. The period when AutoIn was always active was a pain.

And there's nothing wrong with Battlefield with bots... at least when it's a LAN game of BF1942. My bro and I use to comp stomp all the time and it never got old.

There's nothing like taking a two person plane to the hilltop on Iwo Jima, having one of us jump out to try to take over the flag point while the other continues bombing the area, then, when we've taken over the point, to spend 30min defending it from an endless wave of enemy bots (coz the friendly AI is too stupid to spawn anywhere other than the beach spawn point or back on the ship).

Sometimes quantity rather than the quality of the opponents can be just as exhilarating.

Oh, I wasn't referring to the past weekend in my comment there. I've seen devs at other times. ;)

True, it's possible that the open beta will be delayed, but that's what's on their website. They've made a public commitment to that schedule. :P

If they slip though, I think everyone will be understanding.

Yeah they have mentioned that the reason that there isnt a Australia or New Zealand server is because the bandwidth is literally 200 times more expensive than the alternatives.

I play PoE a lot, so just a few points:
- The website does say that PoE will enter open beta in late August but the 9.11 patch (the version that ran during the beta weekend) was released a month behind schedule so open beta will most definitely be later. Currently, there are 2 more major patches scheduled before open beta.
- You only saw the devs talking in the global chat because it was an open weekend. They are normally much less active as they are *of course* making the game.
- During the weekend the chats were area segregated (because of the larger amount of people). Most likely when PoE enters open beta the chats will run the same way so that they dont get heavily spammed.

Oh, I have no data to back my statement up, it's just the in-thing to pick on Telstra. :P

The expensive server hosting is real, though. I dunno what causes it, though. I certainly hope that once our network comes into the 20th century (not a typo), it will get cheaper.

"No doubt" I assume. ;)

Aus server hosting is kinda expensive. Plus, companies usually have to deal with Telstra. :P

Singapore's usually chosen as the next-best alternative as servers there are cheap and the ping is OK.
